The technical end of it, very much so. The social end of it, not very well.

Yeah, it doesn't make me like it more though knowing that I understand what I'm doing every day.

    Meh, it pays the bills.

If you fully understand your job, you've been passed over for promotion

Very few people really understand their jobs fully. Its all about looking smart, running around to important meetings that nobody else knows about and telling the boss that that tie really behooves him.

At least you admit it OP. Plenty wouldn't. Only have to look at a lot of the infastructure of this country to see what I mean. 1 billion for luas for example. A fvcking laugh!

I'm similar - I do my job well but I just can't get to grip with the politics of it

Part of my job has me doing something I'm not qualified for... Scabby fcukers won't get someone qualified as I'm "getting by so far". I've been vocal enough about it so should it go tits up on me in the future I'm covered...ish. I hope.

That's the sort of high standards that will keep McDonald's on top for a long time to come.

I understand my job. On the occasions I'm not sure, I ask for guidance.

I work in IT support - IT where I work includes, Mobile Phones, Phone Systems, Projectors, TV's and AV equipment, CCTV, Access Control Systems, Photocopiers, Printers, Computer/Server hardware, Software of all description, network support, desktop architecture and a whole heap of other stuff.
Do I understand all of this? Not a notion. I have a broad idea of most stuff but a lot of it is really whinging it, using google where possible, looking like I know what I do and using my intelligence to get past tricky situations.

While I understand the role of my job, there are vast tracts of it that you cannot realistically understand from top to bottom - like a lot of stuff in IT I suspect.

I understand it enough to get by, but what really helps is, I fully understand the politics of the place. This I've found has helped me get more pay and more holidays than understanding my actual job ever would.

Vocal is no good. Put it in writing or it didn't happen

I moan about it enough, it's in email and it's in my objectives notes - I'm only short of scratching it into the back of the toilet doors :)

My manager has most of my work automated. I don't understand the stuff behind the automation because it's all scripted in various batch files, .net programs and Excel Macros.

Hell I only learned how to use the Vlookup function last week.

Don't miss what I did before my transfer to this. Feckers still ring me to complain

In my job, I start off learning what to do, but it takes a hell of a lot longer to understand why I'm doing it.

I understand most of what I do at this stage, but there are some complicated transactions I can never seem to get my head around.

Damn you debits and credits!
