Who told you it has changed to five years? I'm certains that's not true at all

It might be different if you are not living independently

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Were you looking to get fees only covered or were you also looking for maintenance?

I'm also in this position looking to go back to do a masters (been out over 5 years) - hoping to get fees covered. Maybe it's only if you're also applying for maintenance that the living independently rule kicks in?

But that really sucks - it's terrible how they can just randomly change things like that.

    edit:

I've been searching around on the net and I've found no mention of the changes you outlined - I even trawled through some long gov pdf.

I'd definitely get a second opinion, call around and get it independently verified.

The "three year rule" has not change to five years

    http://www.studentfinance.ie/downloads/Student%20Grant%20Scheme%202011.pdf
“Re-entry”, for the purposes of this Scheme, means a mature student
entering an approved course following a break in studies of at least three years,
having previously attended an approved course.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Howdy,

Sorry for jumping on board your thread, but what is this 3 year rule you speak of? I'm going in to my final year of an undergraduate degree and qualify for free fees/grant etc at the mo, are you saying I have to wait for a 3 year gap to avail of the same at postgrad level?!?

    Yes and No

The three year rule is if you take a year out after your undergrad then you won't be eligible for a grant for a postgrad as an independent mature candidate for 3 years. If you go straight into a postgrad that's fine. If you wait 1 year you can still apply as a dependent student.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but does this mean I can't apply as a mature dependant after a 2 year break  I had never heard of this

No the 3 year rule means that you cannot change your status from dependent to independent for 3 years. Once you are dependent then the 3 year rule should not affect you too much
