What is the fascination with Zombies? They used to be the bailiwick of the mothered bookish and lonely but now every cünt seems to be ****eing on about Zombies.

I know that during times of recession people's interest piques in horror and zombie movies but it seems to be an all pervading trend of late. Interesting.

Sure, in a few years people will be bored with Zombies, and people will be interested in Werewolves or something again. These things seem to come and go for various reasons.

Also, I reckon fears of disaster and pandemic have something to do with renewed interest.

No, it is. It seems that from a pretty small, left of field subculture has sprung this significant industry churning out zombie related consumables and why now.

Probably because The Walking Dead is awesome, and zombie walks are fun!

I thought that whole Zombie thing had finished years ago, but then it just seemed to come back from the dead.

It makes a change from vampires which have been done to death even though they're already dead.:(

Agreed, back in the early '90s no-one was into horror. Could never understand the revival and lousy remakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,128 ✭✭✭✭aaronjumper

Because you can be cruel to
    Zombies and not have
    people give out to you.

Also your free to kill them
in whatever way floats your boat.

That's just a guess by the way, I like Zed movies
and games but if you were to ask me why I would
not be able to tell you.

Then again maybe I'm just weird. . . yeah that's probably it.

Vampires were they in thing for the last few years, its about time zombies climbed back out of their slump to rise to the top spot again.

Theres a certain attraction in a slow moving, brain dead enemy which provides cannon fodder for would-be Rambos. Who wouldnt like to loot a gun shop with a gang of survivors and proceed to fight your way through oceans of undead with an assortment of small arms! Fecking cool!

The zombie apocalypse is not a matter of if but a matter of when. Be prepared, have a plan and remember any shot that's not a BOOM headshot is a wasted bullet.

Remember the 21st of may and the end of the world thing, It is written I believe, that when this does happen and the 2% of people who are raptured are taken in the limmo up to heaven, that hell, will fill up instantly, and the dead shall then walk the earth.

So you better have your sh1t together.

Not when it's prepared for any eventuality.

Deep down every human on this planet wants the world and life in general to come to an abrupt and exciting end, there's no point in denying it's what you want and you'll find no greater pleasure than planning for that horrible end so that you can survive long enough to watch everybody else die.

I'd rather the World End (or become a post-apocolyptic) due to Zombies than Recessions, Natural Disasters or The Mayans running out of paper

Eventually the mainstream entertainment people need new ideas to pilfer, so they raid the underground.

There is also the fact that folk who's first scary movie was a George Romero flick are now in a position to write and make their own.

They're analogous, in these harsh economic times, zombies represent the unemployed.

Not sure if anyone here has read World War Z, but you should, it's a really good read and not done in the typical crappy way.

It's set several years after zombies have nearly wiped out all humans, but the author had the good sense to ask the questions in the book that most people ask when watching horror films, e.g. the U.S. Army are getting ready to fight a load of zombies and yet they build sandbag defenses to hide behind... as the character in the book asks, "Why are we hiding? I thought the whole point was for them to see us and come at us?" (I'm paraphrasing there).

The book is done as a series of interviews with survivors, and shows all the stupid fook ups by the leaders of the world. Author of the book is Mel Brooks' son :)

It's being made into a film, only saw the first set photos this evening funnily enough, Brad Pitt's in it (his company won the bidding war with Matt Damon's company to make it)

Also worth a watch is The Walking Dead, brilliant recent show (based on a long running comic series), think RTE are showing it at the moment, if you've not seen it then I recommend it strongly.

Unfortunately, there have been some recent bags of shíte zombie films, the Resident Evil series in particular, and some of Romero's recent efforts have been poor (I liked the last one though).

You should all try and watch The Walking Dead if you can, I think you'll be surpised, put it this way, my Dad has no time for "creepies" (his term for horror shows / films) but even he enjoyed it!

Yeah, it really is a great read alright. I love how all the countries reacted largely as you would expect them to (the North Korean one was ****ing awesome) and even the detail that he went into to figure out why weapons that are effective against the living wouldn't work as well against the dead.

It was very well done, still can't believe he is Mel Brookes kid though.

This link shows the first set pics (another link inside shows other set pics), haha and it's extra cool that the creator of Babylon 5 penned the original screenplay (yes, I'm a nerd lol)

Max Brooks wrote a zombie survival guide too, bought it for a Dublin to Crok bus journey one day. Very funny book, I'd say I looked like some weirdo on the bus...didn't even holster my machete.

Why has the world gone zombie nuts you say? I don't know what world your living in, but at best that's an exaggeration. A zombie forum on Boards doesn't exactly equate to the world going nuts now does it?

In fairness, over the last 5 to 7 years there has been a huge surge of zombie related ****.

Computer games, movies, a prime time TV show, countless books and comics etc

As such, it's a valid point, the zombie centric story has moved from cult underground to mainstream.

For those who are interested and don't frequent the Zombie Survival Forum there is an absolutely brilliant (and free) podcast that tells the story of a zombie apocalypse. It's called We're Alive and can be found here.
