recently applied for social welfare (jobseekers allowance) and was denied on the basis that my spouse earns too much money per week. i think the base was €320 and my spouse made more than that per week so i was disqualified. social welfare officer stopped at my house to check out the pay stubs and said sorry, nothing i could do. just curious if there is anything else i can apply for? we want to leave the country, but how can we do that if we have no savings and i can't find work? im sure loads of other people are in the same boat.

Do you have children? Then apply for FIS.
If not, try and find a beneficial training/education scheme that may entitle you to have some income.

Do you mind me asking how much he makes as I'm trying to work out if I'll get any benefits?

she makes about €500 per week. breaking even every month and we never do anything like go out to eat or go drinking in pubs. don't know how everyone else does it. and then if she made the €320 per week to qualify for social welfare, i would be lucky to make the difference to bring us back up to €500 a week. when the SW officer came to my house for the means test, i asked him what options i had and he said "maybe open up your own business." WITH WHAT MONEY!!!!?????

Crap my boyfriend makes the same so I guess I won't be getting anything. I've been waiting 7 weeks you think they could have told me this earlier?? When I went in for the means test the guy said I should get something... :(

Maybe you're assessed slightly differently because you're married? At least you can share tax credits :) so unfair that I can be penalised for living with someone but get none of the benefits

yea, the entire process is stupid. the first thing they asked me was how much my spouse made per week. i told them, yet it took nearly a month to get the SW officer out to tell me she made too much. not to mention i had to drive there 3 times and drive my wife to work to get the car, which cost me a fortune in petrol. i actually signed on so i thought i was definitely getting something. got a notice in the post to "report to sign on for payment." talk about a slap in the face when i found out i wasn't eligible.

yes, i probably am assessed differently. we still have to go to tax office in galway to sort out our taxes. and we've been married since january 2009, LOL. seriously though, how do they expect people to get their lives together? there is no way out for us. we basically spend all our money on cost of living and food. never drink, never go on holiday. this is insanity. we talked about going to canada, but you tend to need money to move to a different country, lol. i guess this is all down to people abusing the system. i am 30 years old and never collected social welfare a day in my life. now i need it and can't get it.

Its absolutely ridiculous the system is so broken. If I were living with my parents who have a secure pension and no mortgage I'd probably get more :( hope things work out for you :)

i remember being a kid and thinking, why do people do bad things like rob banks and hurt people for money. now i understand why, lol. push people long enough and they will snap. not saying i will, just i know why people do now, hahahaha

cheers. hope things work out for you as well :D
