Philips TV Auto-Volume Leveling

This has been bugging me for quite some time.

    I have a Philips 42PFL8404

The problem I have, is with the Auto-Volume Leveling option.
It's always faded out for me.

And when I watch TV, I know the auto volume leveling is turned on, because when a particular sound effect occurs whilst someone on it is talking (like any small, quiet sound) it drops my volume right down before getting louder again. I don't have the option to switch it off it's just faded out. It's driving me almost to the point of insanity because I was able to turn it off before. But not now.

    What can I do?

I want to have the option to turn Auto-Volume Leveling on or off. I don't understand why they have a feature on the telly that I can't use.

Please help it's really bugging me :(

    Hi Gamercfc

    Thats an interesting issue!

I no longer have an example of this TV to play about with in the shop (and the instuctions dont really help funnily enought...)

I had a play about with one of our newer TV's (the menu layout is a little different) and the only way I could have the TV grey out the Auto Volume Leveling option (ie make the option non selectable) was to actually switch the TV Speakers to OFF in the menu.

So a couple of questions for you -
    1) has this always been the case?
    2) are you using the TV's internal speakers or have you switched them off and using an external amp & speaker combo
    3) have you tried updating the firmware?
Here's a link to the latest update
    http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?tmplt=ePlatform%20-%20Philips&scy=IE&slg=ENG&sct=8000_SERIES_FLAT_TV_SE&cat=TELEVISIONS_CA&session=20110706051518_83.70.176.90&grp=SOUND_AND_VISION_GR&ctn=42PFL8404H/12&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software

    Maybe the above will help?
If you could jot down all the Sound settings you have made on your TV I could have a look at them and see what I can come up with.

    Hope this helps abit

I have TV Speakers set to On (not Automatic Easylink, I dont know what that does)

Surround set to On but when it's Off it doesn't make a difference to the auto volume option being available

Headphones Volume is just at 30 but I don't use headphones anyway

Delta Volume is at default (0)

    Balance at Default

I've changed all of these around before switching to default

and then Auto Volume Leveling is just greyed out.

Very rarely the option is there for me. Sometimes when I'm watching Sky it's there for me to change, and other times I can't change it at all.

When I'm playing the Xbox it just doesn't show at all even though it used to.

I'm using HDMI for both Sky and the Xbox

It might be something to do with them though I never thought of it i might check in a while

would resetting my TV to Factory Settings maybe fix it?

Can't see it doing any damage surely

    Hi Again

You can certainly try putting it back to factory settings BUT as you have most likely spent time setting the image up the way you like it would be worth taking a few momnets and noting down all your various image settings so you can recreate them when your done.

I have tried all the settings on our 40PFL7605H instore and the only way I can get that option to grey out is by turning the TV speakers off.

I've tried it with a BR player plugged in via HDMI and a FREESAT Box also via HDMI.
Even tried putting the TV into PC Mode

I hate to admit it - i'm at a loss as to why this is happening!

Try the Factory Reset option and try updating the Firmware (from the link I sent you above)

Let me know how you get along as I'm very curious now!

    Cheers
    Ash
