Advice for a scared solo traveler?

I need some advice re solo travel. I'm a 28 y/o gay male.

I have just come back from Thailand and Cambidia. I went as part of an organised tour group and had an amazing time. However, when the tour finished in Bangkok, I was to have 3 days there on my own and then fly to Singapore and have 3 days there solo before coming home.

On the second solo day in Bangkok though, I became super depressed and lonely and got freaked out about being on my own and about going to Singapore on my own. I just was so lonely and hated the idea of being on my own. So, I booked a flight home from there the following day.

Now I'm depressed cos I really want to travel more and for various reasons, my mates wouldn't be in a position to join me. I see people heading off on their own and having the time of their lives - why can't I do it? (Another time, I was to go to Krakow for 4 days on my own but I cancelled it)>

    Any advice greatly received!

Possibly one for personal issues forum?

Many folks find the experience of solo travel daunting, you're certainly not alone there.

A cumulative mixture of tiredness, heat, humidity, overpopulated streets, hassle from hawkers and homesickness can get on top of some folks and manifest as acute anxiety. Sounds like you may have had a dose of same. As a matter of interest, were you on any anti-malarials?

As you've mentioned a previous incidence of travel related stress, it's something you should possibly address with a psychotherapist. You're young, you're aware you have an issue and you're willing to seek assistance. That's a very good start. I'd imagine a good therapist would be most optimistic you'd be able to enjoy a positive outcome.

    Best of luck.
