Taking large knife through checked luggage?

Im currently in Italy and as I do quite a bit of hunting I was considering picking up a large hunting knife here, I just need to know whether it would be allowed back to Ireland through the checked luggage on the plane? I wouldnt be carrying it on board so I figured it would be ok. Can anyone help me out a bit?

I brought bayonets home in checked bags on two occasions without any problem. (I'm a WW2 militaria collector!)

I have flown several times with a large kitchen knife in my checked-in luggage. No problems whatsoever. As long as the knife is not in your carry-on, there is no reason it should be forbidden.

My sister brought a 12-inch machete through in her luggage, coming back from Ghana. She just wrapped it in clothes (so it couldn't pierce the bag) and put it at the end of her bag.

I regularly take diving knives abroad with me. No problem whatsoever.

My brother brought home 2 crossbows and 2 machetes from spain they never spotted them if they had of done they would have been confiscated, 1 knife was later confiscated after a guarda called to the house during a domestic and spotted it, he had used it for gutting fish earlier that day and was left on the side to be cleaned. They are illegal so if found they will be confiscated. dont think we have border security like New Zealand.
