    Hi all,

We have a Mira electric shower which started making loud noises at the weekend, still heats the water but little pressure so imagine it's on its last legs. We've had for 11 years and used daily so perhaps time for a new guy.

Simple electric shower setup at present, takes cold feed from tank and heats up, no hot water feed (although I have the hot water pipe in place).

Long time since I was shower hunting so just wondering what you all recommend is a current model good shower.

    Thanks

In the past I normally used Triton.

1/2 of the plumbers I meet say that Triton is the best and the other 1/2 suggest Mira! So I guess there is little difference in terms of quality.

I would suggest that you replace like with like (another Mira) as the fixing holes, piping and cabling will align with what you have.
Otherwise you may have to replace/drill/cut tiles, which can be a pain.

apparently the triton has a slight edge:confused:

but like brand for like will prob simplify the swop

also make sure the kw rating of new shower is suitable for existing wiring

True, true, the road of least resistance is preferred unless one model is significantly better than another

Good point. The cable should be no smaller than 6 sq. mm (sometimes 10sq. mm)

there seems to be a lot of confusion on shower wattage

I had a Triton T90XR leccy shower installed during my house rennovation/rebuild.

From new it was/is a noisy shower.

I very recently changed over to a Mira Advance Thermostatic leccy shower.

Its whisper quiet, you cant even hear it when its on.It has an eco seting for power and water consumption and the showering quality is better than the Triton.

Any hassle lining it up with the existing Triton wiring/plumbling?

    Nope,
I am sure the fixing holes were not the same?

your old shower was pumped and you're new one is mains fed:)

that would account for the noise difference

The t90 you had was a tank fed pumped shower. Your new one im fairly sure is a mains fed one with no pump, so thats why its nice and quiet. If the OP goes down this route they might not be all that happy with it.

If the cold tap is put on in kitchen then it will affact the non oumped showers, or even if a toilet is flushed as the attic tank will start to top up etc. Not a bother for some users, but annoying for others especially if the mains pressure is not great.

For the same KW rating, the temperature will be the exact same at the same flow rate, so there should be little difference in performance, except its quieter, and possibly its a higher KW rating than the triton one was.

Its not usually too much bother to change over from mira to triton etc, but if you were happy with your last one and got 11 years from it, another one wouldnt seem too bad.

Just 1 hole had to be drilled to fit/align it perfectly straight on the wall.

The exiting holes (bar 1) were able to be used to fit the Mira.

That 1 hole (when it was the Triton) was filled in with waterproof Tech 7 and the Mira Advance actually sits over it,so it cant be seen

The shower head track/sliding bar was also cut to size to make use of the existing holes that were from the Triton shower head sliding track/rail.

No point in drilling extra holes and making it all look messy.:(

It was very easy and simple to do.:)

yep-they're not the same and can't be swapped afaik anyway

i'd rather the noise and the constant pressure of the tank-fed shower

Yea if your swapping from a pumped tank fed to a mains fed shower, the water supply has to be changed from the attic storage tank to the mains pipe feeding the storage tank.

I`d be the same with the pump noise, id prefer to have the independent water flow that goes with the pump. They are fairly quiet on solid walls, its the partition walls that make them a bit noisy. Not something i`d be bothered by anyway.

Might work out better for anyone with rain harvesters as well, having showers on storage tanks rather than mains, if metering by the litre is coming in here.

It appears my choice remains with Mira then and the kinda only have one model and it's the Mira Elite ST

    Woodies €249
    B&Q €240
    Tubs & Tiles €229

Not sure whether these items get the pensioner's discount so gonna check up on that tomorrow.

Went with Hugs and Smiles in the end and plumber took off old shower and fitted new one (small bit of pipework extending required) inc. electrics and fittings, 1.5hrs @ €50 and all working well, fair bit more flow/pressure when compared to old model.

I hope he tightened the electrical connections well. I was at one last month to connect it to the MCB board, and the plumber was after connecting the cable in the shower. I had a look during commissioning, far too loose they were.

I presume so, that's not a cable I'll be tugging at!!!

No, but non sparks often barely tighten connections, and with the amps a shower draws, its important they are tight enough.
