I have installed a loft aerial in a house in south county Dublin (Killiney) and the RTE/TV3 signal is ok-ish but not great & a bit grainy, would a cheap €14 booster from power city do the trick & give us full power? or should I be thinking about attaching an external aerial to the chimney stack?

In other words, do roof slates kill the signal somewhat?

Yes. External is better unless you are close to the transmitter in a strong signal area.

I assume you looking at the 4 analogue channels i.e. grainy pictures. For the Saorview digital channels the loft aerial should be OK, the analogue signal will cease towards the end of 2012 in any case.

Currently its the analogue signal were getting, but I am wondering what will heppen when we get a Saoirview box, will the grainy signal from the loft aerial be strong enough to get a crystal clear digital picture? or will the digital picture suffer too?

You should have no problem with Saorview, the signal is much more robust.

I have a loft antenna in a house in Bray, pointing at Three Rock.
    Works perfectly for Saorview.

From Killiney, being that little bit closer, you should have no issues.

Also Saorview is on Ch 54 and 58, much higher in the band than RTE 1 and 2. You need a wide band for both analogue and Saorview. My experience is that a simple aerial works for 3Rock Saorview here in Ballsbridge and probably the same in Killiney. The signal is very strong.

Unless Killiney Hill is actually between you and Three Rock, the analogue signal should be absolutely booming in with a wideband UHF aerial! Just check your connector at the TV end to ensure that a "whisker" of braid is not touching the central core. Absolutely no reason to use an amplifier that close to Three Rock. Once your analogue signal is good, then Saorview will be no issue. If you have a connectivity issue which is intermittent it may cause complete drop-out of digital signal, where you might just get a graininess on analogue.
