It looks a bit like rosacea:( I have a touch of it myself around my nose and cheeks. I've been trying out a lot of different products recently and I think Weleda Aknedoran Purifying Lotion is making a difference as in the area is less red. http://www.lookfantastic.com/beauty/weleda/weleda-facecare/weleda-aknedoron-purifying-lotion-50ml.html (free delivery from that site btw!) Also am using Garnier Pure pore cleansing face wash and moisturiser. http://www.garnier.com/pure/
I find all those products can be very drying though so I use another moisturiser during the day and rosehip seed oil at night as well.

i dunno what these are called - but they seem more severe than blackheads, any idea as to what they are, what is causing them, or how to get rid of them would be great

    thanks folks!

I'm far from an expert but they might be blocked pores, and its probably related to the rosacea. If its worrying you a lot you should see your doctor who could recommend a course of treatment or refer you to a dermatologist. From reading up on rosacea it can be trial and error to find what suits your skin, what works for me might not work for you. Give the products a go. The Garnier pure is available in most chemists and supermarkets and isn't expensive so its worth a try. Might be worth getting a face scrub too.

That looks like milia, (the white black heads) on your nose. Have you got rosacea??
The difference between milia and blackheads are, the pores are open for blackheads, and its the air that makes them look black, but the pores are closed for milia.

They usually appear underneath the eyes, and its not recommended that you pop them like you would a black head. What you can do, is punture a tiny hole in it, using a sterile needle, and using both index fingers and a tissue, gently rock from side to side, allowing it to escape from the hole that you've pierced.

if you have rosacea, see a dr who can recommend products.

I would also recommend that you look at your skin care.
I'd recommend that you cleanse your face morning and night, and you could also use an exfoliator twice a week. If you do have sensitivity or rosacea, then don't use an exfoliator with beads in it as this can aggrivate it more.

I'd recommend the daily mircofoliant from dermalogica, and use it every morning, or every second morning even, after you cleanse. This will help slough off any dead skin cells, and will promote desquamation.

i dunno what these are called - but they seem more severe than blackheads, any idea as to what they are, what is causing them

They are Milia (milk spots) basically they are small cysts filled with keratin it is a very common skin condition. They are deep seeded white bumps that form when skin cells and sebaceous matter become trapped rather than exfoliate naturally. It also looks like you might have rosacea as another poster said, you will need to see your doctor if you do.

To get rid of the Milia

Take a good look at your diet are you eating enough fruit and veg, drinking plenty of water? if you drink tea, coffee or alcohol try cutting down. You need to start flushing any toxins from your body so start by drinking lots of water.

    Treatment
    Cleanse your skin

Get a face cloth and sit it into a bowl of warm water for a few minutes then squeeze out the water and place it on your face for around 3 minutes. This will soften dead skin cells.

Exfoliate - you will need to invest in a gentle exfoliating cream (most chemists will have them) Gently rub the the cream into the skin, this will remove the dead skin cells. Never squeeze or pick these spots as it can lead to scaring!

Cleanse the face again to remove the exfoliating cream and apply moisturising cream (if you use them)

I would recommend doing this twice a week and a mask once a week if you can.
