Suntax 132 AFn

I just found a Suntax 132 AFn and attached it to my Nikon D40. I took a few shots and found that the D40 doesn't seem to know that the flash is attached, as it tries to open the built-in flash. Also, since it doesn't know about the flash, it adjusts the settings on the camera for no flash (i.e. longer exposure), resulting in bright, washed out photos. The flash also fires on every photo taken, even when it isn't needed.

I know the flash is old and I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas of how to use it (other than selling it). Maybe there's some setting on the D40 that I'm missing.
