Don't sweat the little things

I read that here on Boards a few weeks ago - someone posted it as a reply & for some reason it stuck with me. I've even used it (in my head) as a device to not sweat about things that really aren't that important. It's a great motto - and I don't really do mottos, but it did stick with me. Possibly because sometimes, I do sweat the little things.

Not that I'll ever admit it though. :D

So do you have any little mottos or refrains that have stuck with you - either recently or long term? And if so, where'd you get them from?

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do"

I got it on a postcard on my first day of college, its a quote from Mark Twain and something i've always thought of when making decisions in my life

"The first time someone calls you a horse you call him a jerk, the second time someone calls you a horse you punch him the mouth, the third time someone calls you a horse go buy a ****ing saddle".

It's from some film or other, can't remember which but it makes a degree of sense with regard to listening to the people around you.

The Lucky Number Slevin was the film.

Not a great film, but had some good lines & some great leading men... Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis, Ben Kinglsey and then the very beautiful Lucy Liu.

And Josh Harnett too, who I hate to admit, is an incredibly handsome young dude, (The bastard)

If you spent your life savings on buying shares in Anglo Irish Bank, you might have other views about this ;)

I prefer the quote from the economist John Maynard Keynes, "In the long run, everybody dies".

It kind of sums up everything about life.

My Dad used to say that all the time... it was a slightly different version, but the same idiom... "don't take life too seriously".

I suppose that's why the "don't sweat the little things" quote had so much resonance with me... it reminded me of my Dad - who I haven't seen in a long, long time.

When I want to concentrate really hard in the gym or when I used to compete, and could feel my legs going numb or my body getting tired, I would repeat the words 'an engine, an engine' in my head repeatedly.

I don't know why it worked for me, but it was a major psychological boost. I would have a monochrome image in my head of this steam locomotive with a big engine and railroads being struck with iron by a dark skinned railroad worker.

I even use these words today in my workplace when I want to really focus hard and achieve something. That's actually a bit cringey in a Ricky Gervais/ The Office kind of way. But it's the internet, I'm anonymous! (I hope)

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you, but because in that brief moment when the coin is in the air, you suddenly know what you are hoping for.

It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.

The fact that it's a quote from Harry Potter makes it seem silly, but it's one of my favorites!

Live the dream and be kind to people who aren't c*nts. Be extra c*ntish to people who are c*nts. Life is too short to try to please others, do what you want to do because it doesn't matter when you're dead anyway. You will be forgotten.

Life is like a game where there is no end e.g. Football Manager or Sims. It can't be completed. Satisfy yourself and try share it with someone who enjoys life the same way you do. Who cares if you piss a few people off or if you fail, like I said, you will die and you will be forgotten anyway. Do what you want to do because when you're an old shrivelled raisin you won't be able to do shít. You have a very small time to live how you want, so just do it and not be a sap.

    Edit:
Also as already stated don't worry about the little things or worry about anything other than yourself or those close to you. The world/society is already set and there is fúck all you can do about it. Want to save Africa? Tough shít, you won't. Want to save the animals? Tough shít, you want. The world is made so that the rich remain rich and the poor remain poor. You will never be rich, you might be well off - but not rich. Actually becoming rich is _extremely_ rare. Don't worry about material things because like I just said, you will not be rich. Don't believe everything that you read or everything that anyone tells you. You may as well enjoy yourself because the more you know the more depressing this shíthole gets, it's all about wealth and that's the bottom line. Don't work too hard because what's the point - nobody has ever looked back and said they'd rather work more, if they did then they were dumb. You can work more and get your measly money while most of it goes to the government and in this country most of it will go elsewhere.

Ignorance is bliss, live the dream and have the craic. Don't worry about arseholes, enjoy yourself and piss a few of them off on the way.

    I like these ones;

"If you're going through hell, keep going"

    "If not now, then when?"

Anyway (in a similar vein to the 'go for it' attitudes of some of the above) :

"Nervous? In 5 billion years the sun will burn out and nothing you did will matter. Feel better?"

    from ****MyDadSays iirc

Both terrifyingly bleak positively motivating. A wonderful dichotomy.
