Washing machine dying??

Hotpoint washing machine - 10 years old (about 1/2 washes per week)

In a really hard water area - never used water softners etc.

It now sounds like the space shuttle taking off every time it spins
Sounds like the drum is bashing around inside when it is spinning.
It's been doing this for about the past month.

Is it worth my while getting someone to look at it?

Do you reckon it's time to just get a new machine?

    Any suggestions/ideas welcome :)

    Thanks

Seems like the drum bearings are gone.

On a 10 year old machine, it's time to change. The bearings themselves and the seal would cost €25 - €30 but the labour could be in the region of €150 so not a lot of point on a machine that age.

You could do it yourself but you'd want to be pretty handy at DIY / Mechanics.

    Thanks Avns1s for fast reply.

I did suspect that labour would cost more than new machine.

I'll have to go pricing them so.

One quick check you can do (to be sure, to be sure) is to open the door of the machine and try and lift the edge of the drum closest the door. If you can move it upwards, then the bearings are gone. There should be no play in the drum.

Sorry the news is not better but after 10 years it's not too bad. We have a zanussi which is about 5 years old at this stage and I have recently replaced the bearings for the second time. I won't be buying zanussi again. There is a parts warranty but what use is that when the laour is so high. If I couldnt ahve fixed it myself, and it is no small job, it would be in the bin!

I just had mine go a while ago. When it span (is that a word??:o) anyhow it was like a jet engine and there was some bits of plastic I think mixed in with the clothes when they were removed, assume that was were the drum was taking pieces off the outer plastic drum as it wobbled around. The repair man said you would be better off getting a new one which I did.I cant complain though as it was a really great machine and rarely gave much problems even though it was at least 15 years old:p:cool:.

I agree with Avns1s, don't buy Zanussi. I've had loads of trouble from both a dishwasher & washing machine made by Zanussi. Dishwasher went within the first year and had to be replaced under guarantee. They've cost a mint in labour costs under the 5 year parts guarantee. Never again.

Just tried this - I can lift the drum up a good bit, so fair play to you for your online diagnosis.

Just so others know - I called a guy here and was quoted about €130 to repair/replace bearings.

I've had a quick look and can get a new (silver/graphite) machine for about €299.

So I'm looking into just getting a new one probably.

Thanks to all of you for replies :)
