Where Night Owls (over 35s will get this reference) used to be in Ranelagh apparently....19 Euro a month if you sign up before opening day. Not bad to be honest.

Someone in another thread reckons its Jaqui Skellys new gym. Flyefit or something similar.

Yep its jackie Skelly's new gym alright - http://www.flyefit.ie/

Thanks for this. The only negative point I see are short opening hours at the weekends and it looks small. Really good value, so it will be interesting to see the quality

Couldn't be. There a picture of some one squatting in a power rack. The one thing never to be seen in a Jackie Skelly.

    Good luck to them.
They seem to have learned from all the negatives surrounding their old chain.

    Is it actually open?

Says September on the site. Great looking place.

    That is what I thought.
I presume then they are pre-selling memberships.

Sorry I should have said great *sounding* place. Obviously I realise they are stock pics when the place is still under construction.
The no parking is a big drawback though. If you have to pay for on-street parking for 1.5 hrs 4 times a week it certainly makes it less of a bargain.

Hmm, dilemma. I've heard nothing but complaints about Jackie Skelly but on the other hand €19/month for a gym that's 30 seconds from my doorstep is extremely tempting.

According to this it'll cover two floors, free weights and changing area, lockers, showers etc on one floor and cardio/machines on the other...

They seem to have reverted back to form already. If you look closely you notice that there's also a 25 Euro "Registration Fee" linked to the "introductory offer." Wouldn't surprise me if there are also going to be credit card fees, renewal charges, etc.. In any case, why would anyone commit themselves to joining a gym that doesn't exist yet, especially if the description of what it will be like comes from such a reliable, well-trusted source?

Wow a whole 25 euro fee for registration?! Same people behind JSF but totally different business model. It'll be good for oul ben to have some competition!

It's not the amount that matters but the fact that it's again hidden in the small print, which seems to go against a pledge of being all upfront and transparent from now on.

 To be fair, I don't see how it's buried in the small print- it's shown quite clearly on the membership selection page beside both of the options...

Well it's the website equivalent of small print. There is no mention of the "registration fee" at all on the main page. Then if you click on http://www.flyefit.ie/join it's discreetly listed underneath the headline "opening price." Also, it doesn't say how much the regular price will be, and thus how much people will actually save by handing money to a gym that does not yet exist. Why not be completely transparent about the pricing structure and publish the total cost upfront? Anyhow, "registration" is simply part of the process of buying a gym membership and there is no reason to charge separately for it.

Everything is priced monthly. The monthly cost will change depending how long you're a member for, so they can't exactly write the registration fee into the "monthly cost" amount for advertising purposes.

And it's twenty five f*cking quid....

Joining and registration fees are pure profit. Monthly subs cover costs but joining fees go directly to bottom line.

It doesn't matter how much it is, the point is that"registration" should not incur a charge in the first place. It's not a service that's logically distinct from selling the gym membership itself, just an opportunistic surcharge pure and simple. It's the equivalent of a supermarket charging an administration fee just for processing your purchases at the checkout.

Different industries have different 'norms'. Leisure industry charges joining fees. Airlines add check in/seating choice charges etc. Ticket sales add charges. Some pubs charge an entrance fee to buy their drink!
They're all ****ty charges but if u want to join, ya gotta pay.

Just as you can avoid going to pubs that charge entrance fees you can avoid using gyms that charge registration fees. If enough people act that way the "norm" will change.

Jesus, some people are never happy. 19 quid a month, with 25 quid as an initial joining fee? It's a bargain... Isn't it?

Well if you don't like it, you don't have to join and can join a gym with cheaper annual subs, and no 'registration' fee.

    Wait....

How can it be small print when it's on their home page and their membership page and in their faqs. Dude you need specsavers ! Anyway it's only €25 compared to Carlise which is like €250 up front and you have to pay for a full year evenn like if you're away or on holliers ....

It's on the membership page but not on the main page and not included in the price advertised on that page. Read what I wrote before you give out.

Two new users bigging up this gym?
Mark and Jackie must have nothing to do whilst the builders are in.

    photostream

It's there on the main page. You just need to wait for the flash movie to play to that point.

That's enough of that anyway. There's a Gym Reviews thread to talk about a new gym and a Consumer Issues forum if you want to give out about misleading advertising.
