    Yesterday
IT SHOULD have been a day to remember — instead it became a day his parents will never forget as their 7-year-old son died after being struck by a jeep on the first day of his summer holidays. He was one of three people killed on Irish roads yesterday.

The boy was struck on the main street in Clonroche, Co Wexford, as he chased a dog across the road.

Investigating gardaí, who have appealed for witnesses, said the incident happened at about 10.45am.

After being hit, the boy, from Canon Murphy Park, Clonroche, was rushed to Wexford General Hospital, but he died from his injuries shortly after arrival.

The jeep was seen travelling toward New Ross on the N80 after the accident. Forensic investigators have examined the scene and the road was reopened after being closed for some time.

    - Gardaí at Clonroche are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the death of the Wexford boy to contact them on 053-924 2580 or on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

    Last week
A man has been found dead on a back road after a hit-and-run incident.

Gardai believe the 20-year-old was struck some time after being dropped off by a taxi in the Lemgare, Clontibret area of Co Monaghan at around 3am.

He was discovered by a passer-by along a minor road. Gardai sealed off the area to allow forensic investigators carry out an examination.

Assuming they don't come forward do you think it's possible for these gutless individuals to go on and live normal lives or will these incidents eat away at them inside and cause all sorts of problems?

Some would be under influence of drink so want to escape as quick, others have no excuse .

Before we get carried away,it is reported in the Indo today that the driver in Wexford remained at the scene until emergency services arrived.

A hit and run driver in England who left a young boy dead in the road ,then drove off only to pause and check the damage to car , was caught by cctv, reg indentification last week .Have to hope he get's a long jail sentence as should all hit and run drivers unless they stop off at the nearest police station after the event .

Yeah, everyone out driving past midnight must be drunk - there's no other possible explanation. Good work, detective.

That was the sickest thing I've read, the bastard just made sure the little boy's broken body didn't damage his car, I hope he gets fcuked up by a bunch of lunatics in prison.

It fcuking makes me mad because I've a six year old daughter and if that was me I'd hunt him down and........well lets just say those brutal videos in Iraq would't have a patch on what I'd do.

I said knocking someone down on a back road in monaghan (killing them) suggests alcohol consumption. Perhaps it wasnt but its a possibility.

How you've managed to twist my words into a suggestion that everyone driving after midnight is drunk is beyond me.

Yes indeed and I think he was a 21 year old with previous convictions who should not have being behind any wheel of a car .

About a year ago and in a simiilar case, an illigal immigrant from Iran who had already being disqualified from driving , mowed down a young girl . Was his punishment a long sentence in jail and deportation after ???? .

No ..... it was deemed his life would be 'in danger ' if he returned to iran so he's now out walking around with little or no remorse .

The young girls father went as far as David Cameron to have this case looked into and and have heard of other drunk driving /hit and runs in UK that got off lightly would only make you just as mad as hell .

No you didn't - your post didn't even mention knocking people down, or anyone getting killed - you said:
"3am on a back road in co monaghan screams drunk driving to me"

That implies that people driving on back roads late at night are drunk drivers. Your sentence stands alone as that statement - you didn't quote anything, and you made no mention of anyone getting knocked down.

So..... Everyone living in rural Co. Monaghan who is out driving in the early hours must be drunk.

It was terrible that this happened but there's no need for such a comment - and before you ask, no I'm not from Monaghan.

Some people go in to a blind panic after doing such a thing probably, and probably don't know what they're doing. So if they turn themselves in in a day or two I'd be inclined to forgive them for fleeing the scene out of the initial panic.

But in saying that if they're the only person around who could help, like that man who was knocked over on a quiet country road, that's something completely different.

The thing about that one is that ultimately it's the person who let the dog out of their control who is at fault there. such a ridiculous reason for a child to die. :(

Its the drivers responsibility ultimately. He has to ensure that he drives suitable to the conditions and the area he is in.As a driver you have to assume the worst and drive accordingly.

Its also his responsibility what he does next.To stay and help a child or to feck off.

these things can happen so fast sometimes you can't react fast enough. but yes of course if something like that happened, it'd be the responsibility of the driver to stop and help out.

you can be driving suitably and still not be able to stop within two feet, or should we all just drive around at 5kph just in case

it's been reported that he stayed at the scene.

    .

I disagree, Not commenting in this particular case as I don't know any of the facts.

If you assumed the worst at all times while driving you would drive at 10 mph. Think of the hundreds of times you have driven at 60 mph, anything could have entered your line easily and quickly.

On another note, I believe there have been 5 deaths on the road so far this weekend. My condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

As far as I know that article from the Irish Examiner is incorrect .

The driver in Clonroche remained at the scene , and was very distraught afterwards .

I was told this by a very reliable source .

It depends Mickey. Again without commenting on a particular incident,it would be the case in a built up area that a child running out in the road would be an anticpated hazard and as such you should drive with that in mind.

Its awful easy to say that. However, small kids can jump out right in front of the car, and often there isn't enough time to stop no matter what speed the car is being driven at. If the kid was inside the minimum braking distance than that's it.

AFAIK one of the differences between murder and manslaughter is how you react after a killing. If you try go resusitate the person or go for help it may be manslaughter. If you run away it's more likely to be murder.

In a good few cases of murder/accidental death post mortems have shown the victim was alive for hours after the incident and may have been saved had medical assistance arrived in time. So not only are hit and run drivers trying to avoid justice they are possibly further endangering lives

no, the difference between murder and manslaughter is intent  If you intended to hit the kid, then it's murder.

Murder is intent to kill someone.Only if you deliberately drove at someone with intent to kill them would it be murder.Even extreme recklessness could only lead to a charge of manslaughter.

Getting away from the point.I'd be interested more in the quality of journalism that lead to the erroneous (apparently) report that the Wexford incident was hit and run.

I was pointing out that here are huge differences between leaving the scene and not. It's LIKE the difference between murder and manslaughter. Perhaps I should have mentioned that back in the day this was the difference between being hanged and not.

Hit and run means that might have been an accident is now a crime.
