    Hi,

Am planning on changing car soon. I currently drive a 01 BMW530 D E39 and am thinking about either a 06/07 diesel Nissan X trail or Hyundai Santa Fe. I'm currently averaging about 42 mpg from the BMW and don't really want to be going much lower that that. Any drivers of these cars out there. What MPG are you getting? Any comments or advice on either would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Most common problems on the X-Trail 2.2dci of that vintage is turbo failure. Most common problem on the Santa Fe diesel would be the DMF.

I cannot see you getting close to 42mpg from a SUV to be honest. They are big, heavy and have the aerodynamics of a shed, I'd say low to mid 30s at best.

42mpg from a 530d? That's damn good I would have thought! I would be sticking with the 530 if I were you!

Was considering buying something similar (jeep) however having driven a few I was disappointed with the feel of them . Comfort wise you will miss your bmw and I doubt that you will get the economy from either of the two jeeps you mentioned. Best of luck but I suggest you drive them in a few different conditions to make sure you like them.;)

The newer model is in a different league

mate your not going to get anywhere near those figures in a 4x4 , I get 29mpg average if i go easy and thats good for a 4x4 , also on a comfort level youll be going down with either of those , an X5 would probably suit more but the economy of those isnt going to help you out either , 26mpg is a fair assumption for 50/50 motorway/city driving in most jeeps, anything above that count yourself lucky

ill give it that but its effectivley just a big car, theyre ok to drive but coming from a bmw the interior build quality would make you cry , and coming from a 530d the acceleration of the 2.2 common rail is nowhere near exciting, and hed be lucky to see 32mpg out of it

I had a 2.2 dCi X-Trail for a couple of years, did ~80,000 miles on it and never had an ounce of trouble from it. I averaged around 38mpg but it would easily see over 40 if you take it handy. Twas nice and comfortable, large boot which became huge when the rear seats were folded flat down. If you do get one, make sure it has a full service history and a warranty (just in case!) I'd also make sure it's a 4x4 and not the 2wd version.
