    personally id post it back. but if he were to try bring it on the plane i would declare it when checking in.

    you would need to check with the airline your using as some will not allow you to bring rifs back even in the hold, as said i would recommend just posting it back

    he checked with the airline and they said no way of bringing one, so he is going to get one when he gets home.

    Unless your friend is able to prove eligibility of the VCRA 'skirmisher' defense, few if any retailers will be willing to sell to him unless they're posting it for him (i.e. its leaving the country directly from the shop, not being handed to him first).

    Some airlines will allow RIFs with additional security criteria needed as well as additional baggage charges (it falls under sports goods); ryan air (and I imagine it's ryan air your mate is using) do not, period.
