Hvar or Brac??

Has anyone been to both Croatian islands? Would you recommend one over the other?

Two single girls looking for a non-package holiday type experience for a week in September. Bit of beach, hiking, cycling, boat trips, sightseeing, etc.

It looks like Brac has a nicer beach (Zlatni Rat) and is a bit cheaper, but looks like Hvar is more set up for tourists.

    Any advice?

We stayed in Vis about 6 years ago and it was wonderful. Tiny little town, really remote and tranquil. Don't know if it's still like that.

i spent a week in Hvar a few years back, it was a beautiful place and very laid back. Most of the beaches in the region are stone instead of sand (which does have its advantages). great walking and you can rent a boat and go island hoping all by yourself. Never been to that other island you mentioned but a lot of them are very similar from what i seen.
If you dont like pasta/pizza or fish then your choices are limited as thats all they seem to eat over there.

    Been to both before.

Hvar is more touristy, more bars, more discos. Like some sort of MTV euro beach party. Italian blokes wearing sarongs and thongs and throwing shapes all over the place.

I would recommend Brac for sure. Real nice for chilling out, particularly the side facing away from the mainland, an area called Bol. Has a beautiful beach.

As another poster mentioned, all the beaches on the Islands are kind of stoney, but nonetheless they are very beautiful and I'd definitely recommend them..

Although I haven't been to Brac I'd second the above on Hvar. Beautiful place but during the summer high-season it's absolutely packed, with a somewhat high percentage of pretentious types.
