That's not always the way it works. There's a lot more than picking the lightest shade and lowest number for buying foundation.

yup, bobbi brown is the best,(my personal opinion) i use porcelain.

I'm very very pale and diors foundation in 10 is a perfect match for me. The brands colouring systems are different, you need to go from brand to brand to figure out their system. If you're shopping at a counter they will colour match you

Good advice here, ask at the counters for advice and if you're shopping for drugstore products use the testers when you are trying to match your foundation make sure you match it to your chest and not your neck.

Not all foundations have a lighter to darker number system. I use a brand ans the lightest shade is 13 as you go up in numbers it gets really yellow/orange and as you go down in shade it goes very pinkish.

Any youtube recommendations for choosing the right foundation? It's been alluded to before but what criteria do you use for matching one to your skin?.

My dior girl told me that the best thing to do is choose what you think are the three closet possibilities, pop a dab of each on your cheek in a row and blend them in individually. Whichever blends in pprefectly to your skin is your match. I don't buy foundation in boots, my dior nude and forever are my hg foundations so i haven't tried this. I've passed it on to others though who think it works really well.

If you have pink in your skin then you should look for neutral, yellow or golden toned foundations. If you have yellow in your skintone then you should look at neutral or pink toned.

Thanks, and guidelines for a tinted moisturiser, the same?.

Yes although most brands only do 3 or 4 shades of tinted moisturizer so you probably would have the same difficulties choosing one. My mua was the first person to talk about blending to me also, blending can be an amazing way to get your foundation perfect and flawless so if you call to a counter maybe ask for tips

I think the best way is to go counter to counter, chat to the people there and get some samples to try at home. Your make up will always look different in "real" lighting than it would under the artificial lighting in most department stores.

Some places don't give samples but will allow you to take your own if you have a little tub. Just remember to mark down the brand and shade!

As recommendations, I'd have to say Bobbi Brown Alabaster/Porcelain or Mac NC15.
