Alpe D'Heuz - Friday 22nd July

Finally, after almost 20 years of being glued to the Tour DeFrance every summer on TV, I have managed to get my finger out and book a trip to see the real thing. I will be in Alpe D’Heuz from the Wednesday before the final weekend of the Tour and am like a child with the excitement at this stage. I have a few queries that some of you Tour veterans might be able to help out with:
    • Can anyone recommend any particularly good spots to watch the stage from? I know from watching previous stages on the TV that they appear to put barriers on the road from a few kilometres from the finish. Any views on whether it is better to be at this section or below where there are no barriers.
    • What time would I need to take my spot on the day? I hear they are expecting hundreds of thousands on the mountain for the day so don’t want to leave it too late!
    • Would I be crazy trying to get to the finish of the previous stage at the top of the Galibier from the ski resort of Alpe D’Heuz. I am not particularly fond of spending the evening couped up in my rent a car waiting to get down the mountain. Does anyone have any experience of the post stage traffic in the mountains? I have read that it can be chaotic?
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
