Hi, just wondering if anyone here can advise me how to change the oil filter and oil on a Fiat Punto 00 model 5 door (1.2 petrol)

I don't know too much about cars but would like to try to do this instead of paying a garage to do it!

    any help would be great

(pics or video would be soooo helpful) ;)

You need a massive Allen key for the sump plug. Also an oil filter removal pliers and a pan to drain the old oil into.
    That should do it.

There's already a sticky on how to service a car. Have a read through that and it'll give you all the info you need. Servicing your punto is a piece of píss and once you do it once properly you'll be able to do it on every car you ever own.

Half the battle is having the right tools so invest in a half decent socket/spanner set. Halfords do decent ranges of tools for the weekend DIY mechanic.

And the main thing is make sure you have a proper jack and axle stands. Never get under a car without axle stands. It might be tempting to not buy a set and just climb under the car but its not worth it.

The Allen key you need Is 12mm

Spark plugs, air filter an checking fluids shouldn't be forgotten either.

Lift up engine on axle stands. Open the bung(basically a bolt), its right at the bottom of the engine, oil will come pissing out(hopefully into a basin or something). Next remove the oil filter its around the same diameter of a can of coke and a bit shorter. You simply screw it off.

When the oil is finishing draining make sure you put back in the bung. Fit a new washer. Make sure you don't over tighten the bung or you will rip the threads and cause havoc.
when putting on the oil filter rub a film of oil around the rubber seal of the filter and hand tighten it back on. Give it a good squeeze BUT don't use the tool to tighten it.

Now take it off the stands and fill her up.
    A few tips:
You'll need a set of sockets, oil filter tool, jack and axle stands.
Make sure the engine is nice and warm.
Remove the dip stick and oil cap, it will make the oil come out faster.
Your engine takes 2.8 litres of oil 10w 40.
    God Im bored....

Good luck with it and DONT panic;)

thanks folks, at the moment the red genie lamp is flashing on when i turn on a roundabout and so i am thinking it is my oil that is running low? I put oil in the car recently checked dipstick and it seemed fine but it is due it's mini service now so I reckon I should change the oil/filter....

I am sorry I am really sh*t with cars (hence my learning through here) :)

Thats your low oil pressure light mate, are you able to check for oil? Make sure you are getting the correct readings. Low oil pressure is bad.

Take out the dipstick, wipe it then put it back in fully and pull it back out. The oil light won't come on if there is too much oil in it. That engine takes 2.8 litres of oil. Look at my first post.

Should I do it when the engine is cold or does it have to be warm?

Allen key is the second thing I linked to. I'd take ramps over stands every time for servicing.

ooorrrr, save yourself a few bob, skint knuckles and an oily driveway, and fire it into your local independent mechanic, who might just have all them expensive tools already, will do it better than you, faster than you, cheaper than you. You know it makes sense Rodney!

I think I might just do that, only this time I will watch closely what he is doing and learn that way :)

Hah! Don't bother, mechanicing is best done by reading magazines, browsing the internet and signing cheques, the actual spannering is dull, frustrating and gives you permanently dirty hands. Lots of people have made a career choice to play with cars and suchlike on a professional basis. This is an infliction which they cannot help themselves from and it is every non-mechanics duty to help ease their pain by writing them frequent cheques and pretending to know or care what they are on about. "make it run better oh oily one", then get back under your lift, heres your cheque.

Don't think your mechanic might take too kindly to you lying on top of him when he is working on your motor, I know it pissed me off big willy style..
