    Hi,

I just got my form today and I am a little confused, I know that you have to living 45km or more away from the college to receive the non-adjacent amount. I went onto google maps and AA route planner and both of the routes suggested are 46.0km this is the better road, main road the whole way. There are however other routes that would take longer due to the fact that they are minor roads but are shorter in distance. What does this mean?, will I still be eligible for the full adjacent amount and also how do I prove the distance from my home to the college.

Its calculated by using the radius from the college, not road distance

So if a person lives 44km from their college they get roughly a thousand for the year, and if they live 46km they get around three thousand euro.

Is it always that black and white?

But they have to set the limit at some point, they system is not perfect by any means but thats how they do it.

As far as I remember when I went to college my home was 1/2 a mile inside the required distance to receive the full grant so I only received 1/2 grant.

I used to share driving with a guy on the course with me who lived up the road just over 1/2 mile. He got the full grant.

page 27 of the statutory instruments "student grants scheme 2011"
section 26 3 a......."adjacent rate ...payable...whose normal residence is 45 km or less from the approved institution".

the only way to get to the approved instuition is the shortest road route...hence aa route finder. do you think the grants office has a way of measuring as the crow flys from every town etc to every college.........

Eh, not trying to be smart, but I believe they would use a map to calculate the radius of your house to your college. I'm certain on this one I'm afraid, I rang my vec today to clarify.

    Hi,

I hope someone will see this, I couldn't find how to post a new thread , so here it goes.

I've filling filling in all the relevant forms and so on for the maintenance grant '11/'12 and after adding everything up I discovered the my parents' income for '10 was €240 over the special rate grant of around €6,000 which means I will get the normal €3,000ish which is great but obviously the special one would go a lot further! I contacted citizens info and explained the situation but the woman had little to offer.

Does anyone know how I could be entitled to the special rate as I am only like €200 over the cut-off rate. I'm studying teaching in the UK if that makes any odds. Any advice is welcomed.

You should submit details of your parents social welfare payments since January 2011 as well as the figures for 2010. The weekly payment rates may have been reduced in last years budget and this should be considered as a change of circumstances by your grant authority. You may be able to find the €200 that way.

Cant see the distance being calculated using radius/As the crow flies. The reason the goverment increased the distance was because of improved public transportation to and from the college, so they think:rolleyes: and from that i would assume its road distance they are referring to.

Distances will be calculated using the most direct route from your permanent home address to your college.

    http://www.ait.ie/informationforcurrentstudents/feesgrants/grants/changestovecgrant/
    Note

Distances will be measured from the entrance of your college to your home, via the shortest route by road. Note that this need not be your usual route, or even the most convenient route.
