Overheard a doctor telling a patient with a knee injury that Glucosamine is no use.

I take Glucosamine and chondroiten tabs every day and asked him what he was talking about? he was in a hurry and said it was reported/made public about 6 weeks ago.
I asked if I should quit and he said ' it wont do you any harm' then he was gone.

Anyone know or hear anything about this?

Plenty of people report positive benefits from Glucosamine & or Chondroitin.

It will not regenerate cartilage as will Green Lipped Mussel apparently.

I've not heard or seen the report that your dr is referencing - perhaps he was being specific as in of no use for someone with advanced osteo-arthritis?

There was an article written in Muscular Development stating the same thing. No difference in tests between Glucosamine and the Placebo.

Checkout pubmed, great resource for debunking / confirming what you read in the Evening Herald....Pay special attention to the trial type/conditions/volume noted in the articles, these should weigh in with the assertions being made or attributed.

Of course, this trial is with patients with OA and RA, not just "an older person who trains a lot".

Having said that, and I'm not doubting the veracity of the article you refer to, there is something to be said for placebo effect.
Proven time and time again, even if you disbelieve and you take a pill, there is a measurable placebo effect in all trials.

As long as you are not ignoring conventional medicine and are not paying $$$ for sugar pills, does it matter as long as you "feel" better/stronger/more athletic (or your knee feels better)?

Big deep question right there ^^^ :)
