Ipod touch, way of proving it's my brothers.

Right, my younger brother(12 year old) had an 8gb Ipod Touch and it went missing. A few months later we found one in my sisters room(16 year old). It was an 8gb ipod touch, with all my brothers Apps and music it. She strenuously denied that she stole it and said she got it off a friend. The thing is, she knew my brothers Itunes account password and claimed to have used it to put all the apps and music on.

I presuming this is possible? But the thing that struck me was that my Brother's email address was on the mail App of the Ipod Touch and it logged in to his mail automatically. Does anyone know if someones email address can be obtained from an itunes account? If it can't, then I can prove it's my brothers.

Anyone have any other suggestions of how to prove it? I'm 99% certain myself that it's my Brother's but I need evidense before wading in, in case I'm wrong.

does he have a laptop with itunes on it, if he does open itunes and go to edit and then preferences, go to the devices tab and move the mouse over any backups there, look for the one closest to the date it went missing if its a shared pc but don't click it, a box should appear with the serial number in it

Thanks for the suggestion but the Computer with the Itunes account that my Brother was using is currently out of use and has been for the last few months. I'm not entirely surely what the problem is but I know it won't start up. My Dad was supposed to sort it but hasn't. I wouldn't hold out too much hope for it, it was an old computer and if he does get it working again I'd imagine he'd have to reboot it.

    Any other ideas?

Do iPods have a system information section? My old creative had one in Settings>System Information (or something similar) which contained a field "Owner: Jack *****". The name was requested the first time I turned on the device and couldn't be edited without a system format, removing everything.

Or just ask the girl the friend's name? If she says you don't know them or something similar, the story is more than likely bull****. If she gives a name, you can follow it up?

The iPhone contains the same section, which also notes the name that you gave the iPhone when you first connected it to iTunes.

An iPod touch isn't that different: Go into Settings > General > About and the name of the iPod should be displayed at the top. Of course if you just called it "My iPod" or something, you're out of luck.

Also note down the serial number in this section. Even if you can't get the old computer working, you will be able to get a backup from the disk and you could extract the serial number from there and compare.

Yes the name in the system information was indeed my Brother's name. Thanks for reminding me of that, but my Sister claimed that that was there because she synced it from his iTunes account. While very skeptical, I couldn't disprove that. Can anyone confirm that the 'owner name' doesn't change when you sync with another iTunes account?

With regards following up the girl that gave it to her, she gave me a name. Her story was as dodgy as **** though. Apparently her friend gave her a lend of the iPod touch because her Uncle had loads of them. She said her friend hasn't asked for it back yet and she's had it for months.

The other thing is that she was clearly hiding it, because she's had it for months but we only recently found it charging behind her pillow a few weeks a go. If it was legit then we would have surely seen her using it outside her room over the months.

Another thing is, my iphone charger went missing and it was an iPhone charger that was charging the iPod Touch in her room. She claimed her friend gave that to her too as her Uncle had loads of them.

Look, as I've said, I'm 99% sure she is lying but I'd prefer to have definite proof before wading in so she has no wiggle room.

No, the name does not change when synced with other itunes accounts. My ipod had the name "D'iPod", and that did not change when used with my sister's itunes account, or my mum's, as I didn't have an itunes account, myself. I have even tested it now, with a iphone4, and the name has not changed, through use of other accounts, and even downloading an app.

Cheers for that. That should do it.
    Cheers for the help guys,

If someone could confirm this too, I would be delighted.

Does your brother still have the box from his ipod touch.

If he does compare the serial number on the box to the ipod touch.

If he doesnt have the box, where did he buy it from, if you bought directly from apple he would have the serial number linked to his apple account.

What computer did she sync the iPod to when she got it? Is it the one that your brother was using or is it hers/another?

Aye, really hope you get this sorted, I'd be raging if I was your brother.

No he doesn't have the box and he bought it from a shop a couple of years ago.

I confronted her there about the my brother's name being on the 'owner' of the iPod and I was met with screams of ''of course it's bloody on it, why wouldn't it be when it's synced from his itunes account''

That confirms she was lying then.

Unfortunately, the computer she was syncing it from is not the same computer my brother was syncing it from.

Should be sorted out tonight, will let you all know what happens:P

Create a new iTunes account and sync it to that one, then check the owner name. There's your proof

She's been very defensive now and won't let anyone near the iPod, will have to wait till the Father comes home to sort it.

That's a good idea, but will be last resort if she doesn't own up to it tonight.

Is she syncing the music also? Afaiu - if you have music on an ipod from syncing Computer A, and then plug into Computer B and sync - you lose all Computer A music. Can someone confirm?

I'd plug her ipod into her computer, open itunes, see if sync music is enabled.

Looks like you've nabbed her. Give all this info to your Dad as conclusive proof (write down in bullet points) and I'm sure he'll weedle it out of her.

Or you could say that the game is up, give the ipod back to your brother and maybe your Dad won't have to know (and get really angry at the deceit).

Yes, that happens, unless the "manually manage music and videos" option is ticked. In either case, the name of the ipod remains the same unless manually changed.

Maybe there's more to it then you think. I would tread careful with this one.
Find out if she is having problems with friends or school first.

All I'm saying don't go with all guns blazing.

Open iTunes on your brother's PC, click on Edit/Preferences and then on the popup screen click on 'Devices'. Now you will see a list of the iPods that have been synced on his PC.

Hover the mouse over the listed iPod(s), the serial number will be displayed, there's your proof.

did your read my post, it was the first reply,

op if ya can take the hard drive out of the broken pc and connect it to another one, go to E/users/username/app data/roaming/apple computer/mobile sync/backup
if there is a few backups go to one when your brother still had it, look for info.plist if it isnt near the top hold ctrl and f then type info and it will find it, go into that and look for <key>Serial Number</key> the serial number will be underneath between <string> </string>

    You real overcomplicated this.

It logged into his mail account automatically. It's his ipod, end of story
    itunes doesn't sync passwords

Also, plug it into a PC, the name will come up, "[brothers] ipod" etc

It does, if encrypted backups are enabled.

Itunes will not sync a backup to any device, only the original.
Once a new device is detected a separate backup is used.
    It's his nano..end of story.

Look for items that can only have been put there by your brother.
Calendar events, contacts, notes, alarms, reminders.

Some of these could come from his mail account, depending on the type, me/gmail/exchange etc but alarms are not stored in email, or anthingy to do with his apple ID account.

    A few ways:

    1. Call Apple with the serial number and ask for the date of purchase.

    2. If she claims to know his iTunes password, then she could (in theory) synced a new iPod Touch from his backup on the computer, thus getting all the apps and stuff. So that's not a foolproof way of telling.

    3. If there are any IM apps on it (Fring, IM+, GTalk, etc) see if there are any old conversations from his friends.

    Best I can think of!

Nonsense. Each time I've upgraded my iPhone, I've restored it from a backup of the previous model, so that all my data is carried from one device to the next. Same applies to the iPod touch.

I never said that it wasn't his iPod touch.

Take it and tell her that you found your brothers after all this time. Let her try to prove its her friends. The friend should have the box/ receipt etc.

call your brother and sister into a room and state that you will end the fight by cutting the ipod in half and give 1 half to each person. If your sisters agrees to it then she does not love it and thus, it is not hers. This means it can only be your brothers which she stole from him.

Pretty sure i read about some king havin the same problem and that worked for him, so it hsould work for you.

Is that it....? Surely you must be able to come up with something better than that. Go back and make something up about downloading the APP that recognises the DNA of the owner or exposes liars and frauds etc, its an ipod ffs, the Applenauts on here will believe anything you tell them....;)
