    lads,

Can anyone advise of ballpark figures for the above job? I'll be phoning palces later but would like to have an idea of what it'll cost.

Also can anyone recommend a garage in Dublin (city centre/west Dublin preferred)

    Thanks

As above, €300 for full kit and water pump on either 8v or 16v engines.

A touch more than that I'd say. €450 would be a decent price.

The kit and wp would be more expensive I'd imagine but I'd have to check. The job is no bigger to do then the base engines anyway.

I can price it for you properly if you like?

Phoenix motors do it for €440 all in with genuine Vw parts. Make sure who ever does it uses a genuine pump, iv seen a few spurious ones fail after a year.

My 06 GTI is in getting in done today (5 years old - only 43k Miles) - I was too late getting home so still in now and picking up in morning.

I had it all agreed to get it done in Newry with a P&R Motors (VW) for around €600 (after conversion) including full Major services with plugs etc - but they called me just after I booked it to say she had got figures wrong and a GTI was about STG£180 more! Canned that and went to local VW dealer and haggled them down to €845 for Timing Belt, Tensioners and Pump with "Lube" service. Once I took petrol to Newry into account then it worked out same... at the time!

Got call today to say plugs and brake fluid needs changing too - latter being done but plugs can be done again; reckon these 2 things would have been in the "Major" service in NI so all said could have saved myself maybe €150 going to NI if I had known plugs and brake fluid would come up today. Can't win em all...

Anyway, looking at bill of just over €900 in the morning. Not pretty.:(

That's pricey. I get mine done in a main dealer in Cork. They do a full service for €220 - Oil, filter, air filter, plugs, pollen filter. I think the timing belt is around €550 I can't remember exactly.

Edit: I just had a look there now at the invoice, main VW dealer. I got:

Timing belt, water pump, tensioners, alternator belt, oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, 2 wiper blades, 2 new number plates and surrounds, spark plugs x4, replace brake fluid, replace coolant, replace bushes in both front wishbones (€160).

For all that I paid €989. You are definitely paying a lot there.

Not trying to add insult to injury but your bill would ave been about 700 with phoenix, it really pays to shop around.

Final price was €860 so not as bad as expected. Was a few other bits done too based on issues that I had with it.

I shopped around; and always do - but within reason; I am not driving to Cork to get a full day's car service done. I even shopped around the UK as I was working in Manchester few weeks back and had to take a load of computer kit over and thus took the car; they were no cheaper over there. Newry suited as I do work up there too - but they worked out same price as down here.

This same garage has full service history on the car so was happy to go with it. Its also walking distance from my house so that helps too.

No insult added as no injury - happy with work done and was budgetted for over the last few months; but would have been good if got it for little over €600 in Newry but seems that was not to be. Looking at my notes (from shopping around;)) It seems most UK VW garages are all in around same pricing. Only major savings are by going to indy's and I really didn't want that chance on a timing belt change as I want a full warranty over the work done.

If the engine blows up in a few days I will be sure to edit this post:p

If your happy with the work done and it's convenient then that's worth a bit too.
