    Hi all,

I have a chance of getting one of these vans "Citroen berlingo" 2007 for a very good price, how much would it cost for a respray?

    Cheers
    rob.

Wrap it would be the easier option...

Not too sure but probably too much to make your savings on the purchase worthwhile. I'd imagine about €2000 though

Why cant these semi-state companies hold on to these vans for longer?

    shocking waste of money

If you aren't too bothered about resale value, and the interior of the van / engine bay being a different colour than the outside, you could probably get someone to do a full exterior spray for €750 - €1,000.

I've had quotes like that for the outside of panel vans. Can't imagine it would be the best job in the world, but it depends if a top notch job is required for a cheap van.

With An Post, in most cases the mileage is very big and the general condition poor. There is a point where it is more economical for them to get new vans. Some vans are literally scrap at 3 years old if they happen to do a route each day down some rough country track or one case I know off where the post van goes across a strand each day, the chassis is rusted through at 3 years. Im sure it is very easy for them to work out the point at which the old fleet starts costing money compared to new. No doubt they buy new ones with a stunning amount of discount too.

I'd be surprised in An Post own any of there vans anymore. Most of them are leased at this stage.

Hopefully more than when the Gardaí bought 700 cars without any discount...

Because the tax system makes it cheaper for a company to replace every few years, there's more tax taken on a new vehicle then 3 year old vehicles. And don't forget the our car industry needs support.

Four Renault vans on that list and all of them require attention

An Post and anybody else with a fleet will lease their vans. That way they get maintenance looked after and usually after four years each van is replaced with a new one. An Post green wont help resale much. White is always best colour for a van.

At least when a semi state company is buying vehicles there is no tax costs (or at least the tax stays within the various arms of the state).

some guys are suggesting getting it wrapped, but for a berlingo sized van, what sort of money would a wrap run to? I realise it probably varies depending on the artwork, but any ballpark figures?

You would assume that but no.

Each department has to do tax returns and send the tax money back to the exchequer. There are hundreds of people employed in the civil service to play ping pong with our cash.

I had an ex An Post R4 van way back when.

I prepped it myself and got it sprayed fire engine red. Painted the wheels white (with a brush).

    Put side windows in eventually.

It ate a gearbox (no oil) and the jack collapsed after a puncture. You could also see on the bulkhead where the mechanics had cut out and rewelded a section to renew the timing belt rather than whip out the engine.

I think I made a small bit of money when I sold it too.
