    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone knows of any Web Cams in the city that would be handy for the Tall Ship festival?

This is the only one I am aware of is
    http://www.waterfordcity.ie/cam/index.htm
but it is just looking at the Crystal.

I remember back in 2005 someone had a web cam pointing at the Quay around the Reginalds Tower area, is that still there?

    - BFG

That was the webcam you just linked to, they moved it when the waterford crystal place was being build as previously it just would have pointed at the old ESB building :)

The webcam used to be sticking out of a window of the building to the right and across the junction from the tower hotel I believe.

Here's another webcam but its no where near the quays sadly - http://www.waterfordcityweather.com/

Is there not a camera on the William Vincent Wallace monument beside the plaza (the big white thing)
From what i remember it used to slowly spin around and the camera would eventually get a 360 view of the quays, etc.
That was bout 7/8 years ago i'd say

Thanks Cabaal, yep Im aware of this web site also, very handy for the weather but not handy for the tall ships.

Thats a pity the city council only have 1 public web cam. It would be great to have one pointing somewhere around the quay especially during the festival.

You might see a few passing Dunmore East.

    http://www.dunmorewebcams.com/webcam.asp?cam=3

You could try match it with the marine traffic website.

    thanks,

I changed the topic subject to reflect all web cam links that can be used during the Tall Ships Festival in Waterford.

I'm also aware of the Hook Lighthouse Web Cams

    http://www.teknet.ie/webcamNorth.html

    http://www.teknet.ie/webcamWest.html

Im still eager to find if anyone knows of any Web cams looking at the Quay in Waterford, that would be a gem of a web cam to have running now.

Granted i'm not overly technical so i'm not certain but surely setting up a webcam for this from a few points up the quay wouldn't really cost anything or be that hard to do?

Bandwidth - the amount of data you would be transmitting could get you either cut off or charged for excess usage of data. Plus you need a good connection to transmit a live feed really.

not so much a live feed but the ones that take a still shot every however many seconds surely wouldn't use up that much.

I wouldnt think so to be honest, the who city is riddled with internet points, and I'm sure the city council own a few strategic viewing points where they could be setup and mounted for great views.

If it was me, I would have got the guy/company (i have no idea who did it) who setup the Waterford Crystal pointing one to setup others since he would know the insides out of what is involved. tbh, i reckon a techy who has "all access" permission to do whatever is required would have one setup in a few hours if they really wanted to do something.

Quick high level home solution which is cheap and cheerful, just in case someone living on the quay wants to have a go, would be buy a Wireless IP Web Cam, programme it to connect to your WIFI signal, point Web Cam at something. To via on the internet, you then open a port forward setting on your Internet Router/Access Point, and if you are lucky to have a fixed IP address you should be good to go. Else if you have a dynamic IP address using this http://www.dyndns.com/

I did the above last year using my UPC internet connection here in the city and it worked. Then I helped a friend setup his Farm so he can monitor his cows calving late at night via his iPhone Safari Web Browser.

Foscam Outdoor Wireless IP web Cams can be bought from about 100 euros (which includes Infra Red, Internet Remote Control Interface and Login Access). I found them very good and in expensive.

btw, you could kind of say real time Feed are still images refreshed every 5 seconds.

Where internet bandwidth becomes an issue is when you have more then a few users who want to view the web cam at the same time, then you need to spend a bit of money putting the web cam on fast broadband connection as a home connection like UPC, Eircom, etc may not be sufficient due to demand/hits.

I'm kind of hoping the web cams we have mentioned above in this thread dont get too much traffic or else its possible we could all be in the dark. They will get a good performance test this week :D

So ssssssh, keep it quite about them:D

Yes you are right, I remember hearing this a few years ago, the web cam on the plaza monument and it slowly rotated. I wonder if it is still there and working. I can't find any old emails about it.

Just done a search for it myself and can't find anything about it.
I passed by it yesterday and i could clearly see the camera still there but whether it works is another thing

The city council or anyone could easily have setup a feed on http://www.livestream.com/ and they they would only have to worry about the traffic transmitting from their router to the live stream servers.. this operates in the same way as live audio webstreams for radio stations, in that they just feed the server with one stream and then that server feeds out to all the listeners/ viewers with a heavier allowance for bandwidth... If i had a place on the quay this is what i would be doing.. with the page choc full of local advertising ;)

The person who set this up deserves a medal.
The eyes of the world now has a live peek of what it is like on the quay.

A company offered to film the Tall Ships festival with roaming film crews and stream it live via their website and Tall Ships website, all for free. Would have been deadly but sadly the organisers and event sponsors refused the offer.

Organisers seems to have decided on a plan once we were chosen as hosts and stuck to it ever since.
