    Hi,

I have an interview for a company coming up next week, job sounds great etc step up & new challenge etc, but the contract is for 6 months FTC.

I am working presently in a permenant role and would love to move. The girl in HR gave no assurances that the contract would be renewed after the initial 6 months..

Is the 6 month contract now the done thing to replace the iniation period or are they generally used for short term projects?:confused:

Not sure what industry you work in OP, but I work in the software end of IT I am a contractor. In IT, companies offer contracts of various length's and are usually based on how long they think the project in question will run for.

There can be lot's of other reasons for contracts being a certain length, budget issues, red tape, politics, you name it.

If the contract is only 6 month's long and they can't guarantee you that it will be extended, I think I'd just be on the safe side and assume it will be 6 months max, then base your decision on that.

I'm not saying you should stay in your current job or take this 6 month contract if offered it, but just work out what you'll do if you get offered it, take it and then in 6 months time they don't extend or renew it.

As I say I'm a contractor myself but it sounds like it's a slightly different setup. Are you on an hourly or daily rate? Or is it a monthly salary? One other thing to keep in mind are benefits. I get no sick pay or holiday pay and no benefits of any kind. I earn a bit more as a result but like I say, if I want to take some time off, I don't get a bean for the days I don't work.

    Thanks G money,

I work in telecomms, the job i'm going for is for an account managers position, so I'm just trying to figure out why it would only be 6 month ftc, when you look at building relationships etc...

I work for an outsource co at the mo and there contract is up in dec anyway but dont want to jump the pan into the fire

Once you are in the business you may be able to jump from one contract to the other. But as a contractor myself I would say "6 months is 6 months".
You may ask about contractors who used to work there, what they are doing now as well.
