Which video file format and which converter

Can anyone recomend a file converter app for Win7? What I want to do is playback and store some TV programs I have recorded using Win Mediacenter. The .Wtv files it uses are hugh and I want to compress to something realistic yet retain some quality. Been reading up on codecs, containers and converters and stuff and my head spins. Which is best- Avi, Mp4 or Mkv? Which (free)converter would you guys recomend?

"I convert wtv files with Windows Movie Maker, I can trim it if I want and it will be saved as a wmv. I can edit wmv files with VideoPad free version".

Thanks Practice... I'll give it a go.

Win7 has a built in converter from .Wtv to .Dvr-ms. Does this give me any more scope?

Your problem is likely to be converting H.264 wtv files.
MCEBuddy v2.0 is supposed to be able to do this - see http://www.mcebuddy.com/Download/MCEBuddy20Reloaded.aspx

Another (non free) alternative is VideoReDo http://www.videoredo.com/en/

Choose the MP4 video format, and you could try aneesoft Free video converter, a totally free windows video converter.

+1 for any video converter. Pretty much the only windows-based one I've found that does what it says, doesn't crash constantly, doesn't stick messages in your videos or only convert 50% of the the thing.
