Just a question about caffine etc. Is it the case that some people are more tolorent to the effects caffine has from one person to another. I could never understand why people have to have coffee or tea in the morn or whenever. It has no effect on me. People rely on it, or is that I would need several cups to have same effect... like an expresso...which by the way doesn't do anything for me either!!
If I am allowed to ask that question, pls fill me in!!

Yep, people metabolise caffeine at varying different rates due to differences in enzymes in our bodies. A lot of people have a mild psychological addiction to it aswell!

Is it the same reason for metabolising drugs faster too?

I find that medications I have been put on (past and present) metabolise far, far quicker than for everyone else, and the drugs will leave my system prematurely.

Is there any way to slow your metabolic rate down?
Doctors can only up dosages so much before it becomes unsafe.

Also, I remember asking my doctor this years ago, but I have forgotten his response now.
How come I metabolise drugs, caffeine (which could be included in 'drugs' i guess!), and alcohol very quickly,
Yet chocolate turns to fat on my a$$ if I so much as look at it?

    Presumably they are metabolised differently?
If so, what substances are metabolised in what ways?

The process of metabolism , especially metabolising drugs is very complicated, but essentially it is converting a substance ( often fat soluable) into a substance that is easily excreted.

This is often done in the liver or kidney.

The process can be affected by other chemicals, so some chemicals can increase the rate of metabolism while others decrease the rate. There are other drugs that also slow excretion.

    Some people metabolise drugs rapidly.

Our ability to metabolise also changes with age.

Our body fat will also affect our ability to metabolise.
