So many cars, so little service history

I've been searching for my next car for the last few weeks. Needless to say, there is plenty of choice out there. However, I have come across an issue that seems all too common. Service history. Or the lack thereof.

I have found a number of cars I would be interested in but all have had no service history whatsoever . What is going on?!?

I understand if somebody has a friend that is a mechanic that "does all the work for them" but does that mean this work shouldn't be recorded? I feel a service history can only benefit both seller and buyer. The seller can ask that bit more for their car as it's on paper how well they've cared for their vehicle. And the buyer can feel secure in knowing they aren't buying a lemon.

    Am I over reacting? :)

What age is the car you're looking for? If it's 3 years old or less, it would make sense (from a sellers point of view) to go to a main dealer and have it recorded.

Otherwise, it's just too expensive a lot of the time, and a service is generally pretty simple to do.

It certainly helps from your point of view though, as it gives you some peace of mind.

[Replaced the anti-roll(stabiliser links) bars on my dads Focus with him a few weeks ago for < €50. Garage did them before for a couple of hunderd. Wheels off, 4 bolts, and 30 mins work total. The car is old though, so there's absolutely no point in going to a garage. Same for servicing]

95% of Irish people couldn't care less about service history. I've never been asked for a history when trading a car into a garage, having to push it on them instead.

I would be looking at cars 6-11 years old.

I agree general servicing is easy to do and getting a garage to do it can be expensive. But keeping receipts for the parts you use and recording the mileage is just a simple. Also, as a buyer, having a service history also makes it easier to sell the car on again.

How would you suggest this be recorded that gives it any value?

By keeping the receipts for parts/materials used.

Wouldn't be a big issue for me, especially on a petrol car of 6 year old +. Condition of oil actually in the car, condition of auxilary belts (easy check), condition of air filter (easy check), condition of plugs (easy check) and condition of oil filter (easy enough to see is it on there for years or not) along with a decent looksee at the car will tell an awful lot. Unless the timing belt and pump were done when due and that is verified by receipt I'd be tempted to get that done though, t belt on a normal 4 cylinder is not a huge job cost wise.

Realistically most/lots of 6+ year old cars won't have a service history so by only looking at ones with one you are reducing your options significantly.

Buy on condition at that end of the market me thinks.
