So I was thinking when looking at another thread about my days of Pitch and Putt and how I always said I'd 'ever play that long game' and here I am today hooked.

I wanted to start this thread to see which boardies also played P&P and where they played and of course their record!

    I'll start:

Course: Good Counsel in Rathfarnham. Wonderful course and have such good memories of being there about 3 times a day in the summers. I thought at the time there was nothing that could come close!

Favorite Hole: 2nd hole. The second longest, about 110 yards I think. You could see a glimpse of the right side of the green as the rest was protected by a huge tree. Either play safe and aim for edge of green or go for the green over the trees keeping in mind the river on the left! I always went for it.

Personal Best: 44 (10 under). I played there a hell of a lot and there was a period where I was playing every hole to a 2 handicap! I have every card and I must add up the hole-in-ones some day it must be over 20!

    Share your experiences here guys.

It aint pitch and putt if it is 110 yards as the longest hole is 77 yards ;)

8.3 (i) The maximum distance from tee to green shall be 70 metres, measured from the forward edge of the teeing ground to the centre of the green.
(ii) The total length of a course of 18 holes shall not exceed 1,000 metres, each hole being measured from the forward edge of the teeing ground to the centre of the green.
(iii) The length of each hole must be marked accurately in metres at the tee post.

I'm going on memory alone so don't be whipping out the rule books on my account!

Keep fighting the fight though Trampas

I use to play a lot of P&P in my youth.

Come summer it was 4 rounds a day and opens all around the place

Or what about the 10th when they used the second green. I don't miss the mats though...44 is outrageous. My record was only about level par. Hole in 1 on 11, that's it. Back 9 was too slopey, could never hold a green playing downhill. Back then I used to tee the ball up really high as that's how I thought you got it elevated.

Creek was a different course altogether, miss those sheep.

Funny how back then we called the 10th; 'the long 10th' and it was probably only 90 yards!

I hated the creek. Longest hole was probably 60 yards!

Yup, was addicted to P&P as a kid, and played a few rounds a day during the summer months. Eventually took up golf maybe 2 years later and was a demon around the greens.

After taking the game back up after a 12 or so year layoff, i find it so annoying that i can't perform at the same level around the greens again, but it will come... eventually.

Best round was -8 in Claycastle P&P Youghal when i was 16 or 17, (i'm 32 now) i did it in competition aswell so was delighted.

The weird thing about me was, i always had a "golf swing" so i was easily recognisable on the course.

Used to play loads when younger. Played in Glenville on the Kiltipper road. Best was about 3or 4 under. Lucky enough to have had two Hole in Ones there! Was able to put some serious spin on an old style commando! Doubt I could do it now!

Played a fair bit as a kid. Had one round of 12 under in practice once. Best I did in competition was back to back 6 unders (2 cards to count) to win the open in crosshaven way back when.

I have gone the other way around and just started P&P a couple of weeks ago, following my 25 odd years playing golf to date.

I'm not 100% convinced how much it's contributing to my game at present due to the fact that all P&P drives are played off a rubber mat with a 60 degree lob wedge and the greens are very sub-standard compared to golf where I play.

Having said that I am moderately hooked to shoot lower and lower scores. I have played about 6-7 times so far and my best at present for 18 holes with 2 balls is level par and I have had 1 hole in one.

I am very keen to understand how the handicapping works though as the competitions in my course seem to be won with around 85 shots for 36 holes and the par would be 108. 23 under seems like a very good score for a weekly comp !!!

That can't be right! No way dudes are shooting 30 under after two rounds. Maybe there are some par 2 holes.

Good luck with spin backs and the putting!

Yeah - must check to see if there are par 2 holes alright. Didn't think of that.

How does the handicapping generally work though - is it the same as golf, where guys range from scratch to 18 or so ?

Also meant to say that I have also already achieved the dubious honour of losing a ball playing pitch and putt. Skulled the thing out of the course into someone's back yard on one of the longer holes - thankfully no windows broken :-o

I never played a club game just casual so I can't really answer that. I wouldn't imagine anyone being at anything higher than 10 though given the distances involved etc but I could be wrong.

Actually maybe it works the other way and you get minus handicaps the better you play!?

85 wouldn't be all that unusual in a Pitch and Putt Nett competition although it would certainly be a very good score.

Ireland's number 1 ranked player recently shots -40 Gross for 54 holes to win a Scratch Cup.

I think Pitch and Putt gets a bit of a raw deal from some golfers who see it as an inferior sport but it's a hugely competitive sport in Ireland (we are World Champions presently).

If you are interested in your Pitch and Putt and would like to chat to similar minded people have a look at http://www.pitchandputtforum.com as it was set up after Pitch and Putt chat on Boards outgrew the Golf forum.

Wouldn't worry too much about it, everyone loses a ball or two.

    Where are you playing?

Ya, see, the handicap system isnt really the same as golf. A 12 handicapper in Pitch and putt (12 is the max) Would be a person who would struggle to break par.

    A 6 handicapper would average 4-7 under a round.

The handicaps go from +3 to -12 (-15 if you have a physical handicap or are plain sh*te) and the womens go higher again...

Cant believe he missed that 6 footer on the last.....

Unfortunately, it does, and its unjustified tbh
