What would be the best way of achieving 100kgx20? Would using 100kg and just going for failure everytime be effective or using a higher weight be better? both? im not a fan of bench but i need to accomplish this...

Why do you need to accomplish this?

What's your current 1RM out of interest

Get stronger... looks how easy Ryan Kennelly busts out 100 x20, 140 x20 and 180 x20 cos he puts up like 300+ raw

Accomplish it for what? Are you doing the NFL combine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,792 ✭✭✭Gandalph

    100 x 20 phwoah...do reps of 85% of your max

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭daveyc21

Without the obvious of getting stronger etc. a good tip is to try and complete max reps as fast of possible. Seems to be the main idea at the combine. Less time supporting the weight means less time to fatigue seems to be the idea

Brian Cushing of the houston texans benching 100kg for 34 reps. Whats your current bench?!

Its just something i said id do... a goal, i injured my lower body so i may aswell get it out of the way.

Current 1rm was 150 but that was a while ago, i dont really bench that much so it could be a tiny bit lower now.

As for how many reps, i cant get past 17... so you guys are saying increase strength, so 120 to failure?

If you can bench 100kg for 17reps you are obviously on the right track with whatever you're doing. I would have thought you should get stronger so treat it like any strength training program.

Heavy weight + low reps + calories surplus = stronger.

Plenty of tricep & upper back work too I would think. Weighted dips, weighted pull ups etc..

    What weight are you?

Yeah the thing is i dont count my calories atall, im at 95kg but i would like to be a bit heavier, i have a pretty good diet i just dont really track anything... i dont know how many calories im getting, the thought of counting every cal i eat makes my head sore... but i suppose its the only way.

Hmmmm ive never done tricep work, what do you suggest? im not doing tricep kickbacks tho! ghey

do you know if its your triceps, delts or chest that are giving out first?

Oh god i dont have a clue, i use a very close grip ive been told, id say my chest only because ive never felt doms in my triceps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,881 ✭✭✭TimeToShine

DOMS are irrelevant here, if your grip is close it means your triceps are probably giving out before your chest. You should try and widen your grip a bit and see if that helps.

If your grip is too narrow you're definatly handicapping yourself.

An adjustment in technique could actually give you those 3 more reps. Although why you want them confuses me. Why not just train for strength and let the reps come.

he just has a goal he wants? what's wrong with that?! 100x20 is a savage achievement and most people who f*ck about in the gym won't even pull off 1/4 of that!

working towards that would hinder progress in the long run IMO

It does sound stupid i suppose but its just something i said id do so theres no going back on it now. I will try changing my grip, just that narrow feels "right" for some reason.

Also i usually hate going the gym with other people, so i tend to go light on the bench, hence the whole 20 reps.. i guess ill start going with my mate and he can spot me on the heavier weights, i have nightmares about dropping it on my teeth ya see!

    Dude.... really?!

It's pretty much impossible to get stronger year around. Especially the longer you're training. It got to the point where I was happy to take 3 or 4 bit PRs a year and 6-8 months of training focused solely on getting stronger.

The rest of the time was spent bringing up work capacity and general conditioning. Not suggesting that's what Jugger is at, but if he's arrived there inadvertently, he could certainly be doing much worse :)

he aint far off the 20 mark at the mo, he could achieve his goal in a few weeks i reckon, how will tat hinder progress in the long run

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. I didn't mean to sound like I thought there was. I just meant it's a funny goal to have, not one I'd ever train specifically myself.

If he does it, I'll take my hat off to him.

See my above reply to Hanley, I don't think it's a stupid goal at all. Just an unusual one.

Fair play to you if you get it, not a hope I could do the 17 reps you're getting now myself.

I'd have a look at your overall technique as well, not just the grip. There's a good series by Dave Tate on benching. Have a look on T-nation.

Go higher (eg 140) for like 4 or 5. Makes 100 seem much lighter

I think this is a good idea.. get a few singles or doubles in with near max weight, then drop back. It'll make it seem easier.

100kg x 20reps is`nt hard too do, but you would have too bench at least 170kg/ 180kg for 2reps too achieve this. Its not a big weight or high rep and most people who regularly use resistance trainning can achieve this..

Most people who train could do 170 or 180 x2? Go away.

Vids or GTFO. There's four adult males I know of that have trained in my gym at my aprox bodyweight (100kg) who have done this.

Of "average" weight (80-100kg - even at that it's greater than "average"), and drug free, yes, certainly. And I'm one of the few people here who can legitimately say you're talking crap based off empirical evidence.

Drug free, in Ireland, at less than 100kg, doing a 'legit' 180 bench, i'd say you could count them one two hands.

I know a 75kg dude who did the same.

n=500,000 (assuming 25% of the male population of ireland will train with weights at some point)

Of the sample, around 10-20 might achieve it.

Please tell me how that is "most". Nobody said it was unachievable. Stop talking about the straw man, and start talking about squod.
