Holding your cars central locking remote up under your chin and opening your mouth increases the range you can unlock the car from.

Need to jumpstart your manual car with a push?, do it in reverse as you will not need to push your car as fast as would be required in any other gear.

When driving an unfamiliar car and If you don't know which side the fuel tank is on to fill up, just look at the little pump icon next to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. The pump handle on the icon will be on the side of the tank.

When you park, always reverse into the parking space. It is much easier to reverse into a confined space than into a place where other people drive. The chance of an accident is reduced dramatically.

When reversing a trailer, keep your hand to the base of the steering wheel and remember that the direction you move your hand will be the same direction the rear of the trailer will move.

When overtaking a vehicle, ensure you can see the two front headlights of that vehicle in your rearview mirror before moving back in front of the vehicle you just passed.

not totally, most have a little arrow these days

There is no way in hell I'd bump start a car in reverse.

It's dodgy enough as is when you can see where you are going.

    Fog lights are for fog...... F-O-G...... F - O - G dammit!!!!!!

On a motorway please FFS drive in the left hand lane, only use the other lane(s) for overtaking, not cruising around at 75 kmh whilst chatting on the phone. When the overtaking manoevure is finished return to the left hand lane puh-leassssse.

The one about the fuel gauge is bs.

We once did a thread on that and it appeared to be correct for most car. But there were many exceptions :)

Generally, the pump handle will be on the left if the flap is on the right and vice versa

    Sometimes there's an arrow.

push Starting in reverse will knacker your gearbox.

Depends on how often you do it :D If your doing it regularly, maybe your attention is needed in another area besides what direction to push start the car in.

Over bump starting in any other gear, how will it knacker your gear box?

2nd is my preferred choice for a bump start. Jump starts are with a set of cables I think. I pull the fuel filler lever before I drive up to the pump and you can see which side its on in the door mirrors

Too much torque and shock combined with the reverse gear being weaker. I'd always use second

BUS DRIVERS. Pretend you're an airline pilot by wedging your accelerator pedal down with a heavy book, securing the steering wheel with some old rope, and then strolling back along the bus chatting casually to the passengers.

PENSIONERS. Try sitting on a pile of encyclopedias next time you go for a drive in your car. That way you will be able to see out of the front window.

SAVE petrol by pushing your car to your destination. Invariably passers-by will think you've broken down and help.

Which ever side the fuel gauge itself is on is the side which the filler is on
, now that is true cause I have noticed it for sure.

I would have thought the opposite was true. When you lock right, trailer goes to the left and lock left trailer goes to the right

Hand at bottom of wheel, lock right, hand goes to the left (initially, from 6 to 9), lock left hand goes to the right (initially, from 6 to 3)

To be honest, anyone needing to use this tip shouldnt be driving with a trailer on.

    landyman wrote: »

Its unlikely to knacker the gear box, i think reverse gear ratios are close to first gear ratios in modern cars anyway, so not much advantage in that regard to pushing in reverse, but it is at its hardest to turn the engine over the lower the gear its being pushed in.

But either way, in first gear for example, the engine will turn faster for a given speed the car is pushed forward when the clutch pedal is released, but the car will be harder to keep pushing, in second gear, the engine will be pushed a bit slower when the car is pushed at the same given speed as in first above as clutch pedal is released, but will be easier to keep pushing it.

So while the engine is driving the car, it will drive the car faster for any given revs as the gears go up, and the engine finds it harder to drive/accelerate the car in a higher gear, its the opposite when the wheels are being made to turn the engine by the car being pushed, higher gear makes the engine not turn over as fast, but the car is easier to keep pushing as the gears go up. Second seems a good starter gear overall for pushing.

I was though to always bump in 2nd. Doing it in 1st/R could cause the car to lock up if not going fast enough and I don't want to smack my face hit a car I'm pushing.

Yea its harder for the engine to be pushed(turned over) via the wheels the lower the gear its in, the opposite to when the engine is driving the wheels.

It's usually whatever side the nozzle is placed on the pump logo is the side the filler car is on.

I thought it was more to do with where the car originally came from? It's been on the passenger side of all the Jap cars I owned and drivers side on American or German cars.

When overtaking, always pick a spot 100m before a blind bend, then floor it and pray. On a motorway, pick the lane you feel most comfortable and then sit there -whatever you do, don't look in your mirrors or pay any heed to what is occurring behind you. When approaching a roundabout, stop texting briefly and veer wildly across as many lanes as neccessary to reach where you want to get to. Upon spotting a parking space to your left, regardless of what lane you are in, simply indictate and head across, others will politely accomodate you no matter what the delay you cause. When sat at a red light, grab the chance to have a quick read of the papers, sure if you miss the green, another will be along shortly. Those behind you will be glad of the break from driving. When towing a trailer, proceed as slowly as you are comfortable with, all the people stacked up behind you are glad to travel at your speed as a welcome break from concentrating on going fast. On no account pull over, no matter how long the tailback may get. I could go on, but I'm sure thats enough top tips for one evening.

^^^^ Hahahaha, the typical Irish drivers! ^^^^^^

BTW, jump starting will not knacker a gear box unless the engine has the torque put out by uprated 300+HP engines with standard gearboxes

When reversing a trailer, open the window...no screw that... open the door.... laaaaaane out fully so that only about 30% of your body is still actually in the car, reverse back and hit the wall 20 feet from your intended target, swear at the dog, pull out again, stop, light a fag, reverse back again and continue untill you hit the gate your forgot to open, break an indicator on the trailer (don't ever replace it), swear at the kids, pull out again, reverse back 3 feet and stop 17 feet from intended target. Exit vehicle and drop the back of the trailer. Roar at the kids again when the 14 cattle don't go into the field you couldn't reverse into into but choose instead to bate off down the road. Light another fag. Kick the dog.

Ahhh Id didn't make myself clear, over a comparable gear, i.e first. I'd never jump start a car in first

I'd always use second and above, even up to fourth on diesels.

I don't see how jumpstarting a car can knacker any gearbox. You're boosting an undercharged or flat battery is all.

when driving on the motorway, if you think that you might need to overtake anything 1/4 of a mile ahead of you but another car that is going significantly faster than you is approaching you from behind in the overtaking lane, be sure to pull out in front of them at the last second without indicating rather than risk having to ease your foot off the accelerator slightly. much better for the other driver to have to slam on the anchors than for you to lose 1-2mph off your own speed.

if the other driver doesn't psychically anticipate your need to pull out in front of him and manages to pass you before you can cut him off, be sure to show him the error of his ways by flashing him repeatedly*.

    * true story, happened to me this morning.
