best of luck tones. on holes with index 1-16 you get 4pts for birdie 3 pts for par 2 for bogey 1 for a double and on holes index 17 and 18 you don't have a shot so take a pt off eg 3 pts for birdie 2 for par 1 for bogey. add all your points up after 18 and that will be your score. 40 pts is nearly always there or there abouts in most stableford comp

When ever I've played stableford all you're required to mark are the number of shots taken - comp comittee should do the actual points calculations.

Points awarded are based on your net score (i.e. after your shot are deducted). Scores are:

    Birdie - 3 points
    Par - 2 points
    Bogey - 1 point

    Best of luck and enjoy!

Cool thanks, so will I mark the score and then over to the right will i mark in the points too or leave that up to the sec? Sounds like a lot of hassle for the sec to add up everybodies points no?

True, the rules say that you only have to fill in the shots taken. But wouldn't it be helpfull if you were to total up the card yourself? Make things a little easier for the guy who instead of spending his Sunday evening in front of the telly with his missus is instead down at the club totaling up the points of up to 200 cards (that's 3900 calculations folks)

Don't worry, you won't miss out on a prize if you've made a mistake as all the top cards are checked.

Also, is your handicap adjusted accordingly after every comp you do? Its not adjusted by handing in cards after your normal casual ronuds is it

your h'cap is only adjusted after GUI qualifing competitions. Unless you have some exceptional scores in non qualifing comps in which case you may get cut on general play at the discression of your handicap secretary.

At least now you have a target to beat. Your fellow competitors will help you fill out the card. Actually it is normal to swap cards during a round i.e. you give your card to someone you are playing with and they mark it. In turn you mark their card. Once you put down the actual number of strokes taken on a hole then you can tot up the points when you finish your round. So check with the person that you are marking for after every hole. Usually best to write the score down on the next tee box or on the way to it or from it.
Use the column provided (markers score) to record your own score so that you can confirm your card when you come in.
If a player picks up because he has taken so many shots that he can not score on the hole just mark it with a -
Also - for the first few holes play on even if you are out of the hole provided that it is not holding play up so that you can get into your rhythm and get a few putts in.
If you are taking a putt that is your last chance to score on a hole - remember to go for it a bit - give it every chance of going in.

Hi Tones, I got 5 pts the first time I played in competition earlier this year, have only played two comps since and got 27 and 22 pts playing off 20, when I play by myself I am usually over 30 so maybe I am just being nervous when there is no need to be!

remember to use your GIU card to sign before and after the competition. Sign the card. Check the date.

I'd explain to your playing partners that its your first time out and they will help you along.

    Bloody right!!!!

Ignore advice to leave points marking and add-up to Comp or h/c sec. Jaysus!!!

    Good luck with competition.

Ya, the comp that I got 5 points in there was no adjustment made because the weather was so bad but have got 2*0.1's back from the other 2 comps. I am at 20.2 now but you still count that as 20 until you hit 20.5

Sounds like your getting there Tones form reading the various threads, well dona mate.

One thing is really important and I'm sure you've heard it before, but its the short game. Practice practice up and downs all day long and if you can start really 'owning' them you will shoot down to the 80's I promise!

    Good luck.

Sorry for the slight hijack; I've not renewed my membership this year as I'm not around often enough to justify it. I still want to play some competitions, not to win or even compete but just to get out and play a round of golf, is this permissible?

Also, does it have any bearing on my playing partners if they are members and playing the comp?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Rowley, unless you have a GUI handicap then it is not permissable to play in a GUI comp(although some clubs let you join in with a two ball and just not submit the card), it will affect your playing partners if there is just one of them with you as you will not be able to sign their card.

Why don't you join one of the cheap clubs(slievenamon in tipp etc) for approx €160 now and play the opens?

So if there's three of us on the round and the other two are members, provided the club is happy for me to be out there, it doesn't affect their round as they can sign each others card?

Slievenamon is a good call but I'm not even playing often enough to justify the €160 at the moment! Had a usual 4 ball where we toured around and paid green fees but our working hours are all out of sync so it's fallen apart a bit.

    Thanks.
