Would you buy a portrait painting

Hi I'm thinking of starting an online portrait painting business.
I could paint anything using a photograph - pet portraits, family portraits, child portraits, self-portraits etc.

Plenty of people get professional photographs taken, so I was looking to tap into that market and provide a more personal, artistic touch.

I was wondering how much somebody would expect to pay for a medium sized (A3) good quality painting of themselves or their loved one? Also, how likely would you be to buy it as a gift for somebody else?

I would really appreciate any comments. Thanks

To be a viable source of income you would have to calculate the hours it takes you to do a portrait. Then perhaps charge anywhere from 10 euro + per hour. So if it took you 4 days to do an oil painting at 9 hours a day thats 360 round it up to 400. I think its a fair price, even cheap. Just dont let people bid you down too much or sell your stuff just for the sake of a sale, value your skills if your good then its worth the money. I sell art myself and if your confident in your selling and let them know (or think) your in some demand then they will be more inclined to want your work. Paint some family and friends and have a portfolio of work ready to show clients. I hope it works out for you, sure you have nothing to loose if it brings in some extra cash. good luck !

It's an area that has been given a bad name due to people claiming to be doing paintings of photographs but actually only doing photoshopped prints giclee style.. which is not the same thing at all. I think there is a market for what you are offering, but for me - I prefer the studio approach and seeing work done by the artist for real. Then again, that is not always possible and if you can turn around high quality paintings for people - it could be a super idea.

Just remember also that the whole canvas printing from photograph has grabbed a large portion of the market who would have possibly gone the portait painting route previously.

    Best of luck!
