    Just on the same topic.

I am in the process of changing my car as I currently drive a 1.6 petrol Audi A4 80K miles on it and the price is petrol is killing me. I do roughly 20,000 miles a year.

I have been to a garage as I feel that's the best chance I have of getting rid of my Audi and they are trying to sell me a 2003 VW Golf 1.9TDI 6 SPEED(red D red I) 145k miles on it . They are looking for €1,750 with my own car. Tax is out on the Golf aso that's another €600 on top of that.

Do you reckon it's a good eal or what ? Havent a clue about cars but I hear that the golfs will drive forever and that's exactly what I need and also need one that isnt too expensive to run.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated .

    What's an OP ???

    Audi is 2002.

Prvious owners of the Golf were a priest, a local guy who I know and then some other guy I dont know. Assuming it was looked after vary well , is it a good buy ? Year doesnt really concern me, it's more tha milage that I'm worried about.

Yeah I hear ya about the VW badge and all of that . Any other suggestions instead of a VW so ??

What about this? Might be too small for you but the engine size is small but still a diesel! Tax is about 450 for the year!
Duno your price range but this might fit!

    Cheers for that.

Yeah looks grand car alright but only problem is getting rid of my own one which I have been having difficulty doing over the last few weeks. That's why I feel a garage might be the best option as I can just trade mine in against another one. They are also offering me a 6 month warranty with the Golf.

Younger car...Golf is a 2003. Engine size bigger but smaller in size alright but makes no difference to me as I dont have a family and no one ever sits in the back seat. Fuel I would save in 2 or would years surely cover €1,750 would I not ??

Just about break even. And then you'll have a Golf with 185k miles on it. Money will need to be spent on wear and tear items.
I'd keep the A4 if I were you.

paying money to change to a smaller, older car with nearly double the mileage for the sake of saving a few quid on fuel seems a bit odd to me.

Couldn't agree more to be honest, this post says it all. If I were you i would get out a calculator and work out the fuel costs for a year for both cars and then decide. While that golf is reliable 145k is quite alot and to have to pay more money to have that seems mad. either find another garage with a lower mile golf or just run the Audi into the ground

If its only ever you in the car, could you look at a commercial car-van sort of thing?
