I have the button with ESP , but when I press , I don't get any light coming on in the dash area..also the button has very little travel which makes me think it's not a real button..

I though ESP was standard, or is mine broken or something?

    Thanks

    Its standard alright I think.

As Lighten says hold it down for a few secs - a light like the one below should come on, on the dash when it's off.

That light also flashes when it kicks in when driving - a empty and wet carpark would be the place to test this!

I don't think you have to hold it down... it's the Tyre Pressure monitor button you definitely have to keep depressed for a few secs.

    It's definitely standard anyway.

Pushing quickly disables traction control, holding down for 5 secs disables the whole ESP syste, (if that option's available).

If you have the button, you should have the system (they wouldn't write ESP on a button blank), but when you push it you should get the icon on the clock cluster.

Also, if you go above a certain speed (30kmph IIRC) it re-enables the system. If you're trying to turn off the ESP system while doing over that speed it probably won't work for you.

    Thanks for all the replies.

When I put the key in the ignition all the warning lights come on, including the esp light ( pic of car skidding)..so the light is there anyway.

When I start the car all the light go off..so no warning lights present. Then if I press the ESP button( short or long press) nothing happens at all...no ESP light on the dash.

I book says if there is a fault with the ESP, the light will remain on( will also remain on if turned off).

Don't know what to make of it really

That means your ESP is working fine, but your ability to disable it isn't working (probably a faulty switch)

Its not a veyron lol at having to hold down the button for 5 secs :D

OP as stated sounds like the switch is duff, the previous owner must have turned it off a lot - joke!

    haha!

Do you think that this is a job for a main dealer? I hope it wont cost much cause Im broke!

The esp works at least, if I floor it in 1st the light starts flashing..but just cant seem to turn it off....

If the car is being put on a dyno, would esp need to be off , of would it matter? Supposed to be getting it mapped in the next few days.

If you are broke save your shillings. Leave it stock.

yeah but if it's just the switch it cant cost much can it? The switch itself doesnt have as much travel as the one beside it( tyre pressure sensor) so Im guessing it must be just a dodgy switch?

There are few situations you'd want to disable it. Save your money and leave it enabled imho.

Walk into a main dealer saying your esp switch is bust and wait for the sharp sound of air being sucked through teeth. Even simple jobs can cost big money when finished and as its actually working ok, i'd go along with the other recommendations and leave it be.

It won't need to be off for the dyno run dude. If you're getting it mapped with Joe ask for Gary when you're there and I'll poke at your button :pac:

Do you have to be getting your car Dyno'd for that or is that a service you do for free?:)

    Hi
Google it, this is a known fault with the Mk 5, the ESP sensor

    Either stays on
    or only stays off

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=66972

    for examples:
    http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-bora-new-beetle/121909-golf-mk5-esp-has-switched-itself-off.html

Try and get it plugged into and diagnosed

Best of luck, mine was in warranty when it happened to they replaced it for free (the garage)

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply..those links are relating to a problem whereby the ESP light remains on-this is a sign of a fault.

However, with mine, ESP is on by default (so the light is off)..ESP is working fine as I have tested it out, but the problem is the button to turn it off is not working.

The button itself doesn't feel rite, there is very little travel in it when pressed. I have ordered a new button/switch from VW at a cost of 25 euro, and they said they would fit it for free (2 min job)

Fingers crossed this will sort it! Although I partially pulled out the switch to have a look earlier and I can't get it back in properly-Hope I didn't screw it up...

I hope to god its only the switch...I'll get back to let you know on Thursday!

I thought you had to have it off as Dynos and odd traction confuse ESP/Dyno results? You guys asked me to turn it off on the 850 but I was ok as it was um.. broken any how at the time.

It's worth being able it if you get stuck on ice over Christmas. I've had to turn it off on mine a couple of times to get out of awkward situations.

Sorry my post was misleading, the fuse can be pulled, the button itself isn't needed :)

The reason is it works off the ABS sensors and on the dyno the front wheels are moving while the rear stay still

try pushing the button a whole heap of times aggressively, if it's broke it can't break it anymore. Might just be the contacts have some film on them.

I'd be doing this engine off, key out mind you!

oh I see you ordered it already nvm
