    Hi all

My partner has a hernia and has been told he could be waiting up to 18 months for an operation, he is very much incapacitated at the moment with it as it keeps 'popping out' and is causing him pain and discomfort, he has no private health insurance as he has lost his job, would anybody have a rough guess as to how much it would cost to go private? I know that every operation is different based on the specific care needs of the patient etc. but even just a rough guess would let us know if we could scrape the money together, as he can't really go on like this for 18 months

    Thanks in advance

    B

In the region of €4000 +. If there are any complications the figure will go up.

Is the NTPF still going? Does it still kick in after 6 months on a waiting list?

Its in the process of being converted into another body - they are changing the name and setting up a committee or something. The NTPF in its current form is not going to exist.

Every hospital has an NTPF co-ordinator. They can be contacted for advice with regard to access to the system

The waiting list for a symptomatic hernia may not necessarily be that long in the public system. A close relation of mine was only waiting a month or two to be seen in surgical outpatients recently. He should have the surgery within about two months from the outpatient visit. He was referred by his GP (I had nothing to do with the referral)
It really just depends on which hospital he is referred to.
