Raw File is getting it's reds really red?

    Hey all,

    wondering if anyone has any idea what's going on here. Below is a Jpeg photograph, straight out of the camera;

    16EE40EC0BEA4A86BAFD7D33D12BD797-0000333410-0002398111-00500L-463E7790F7C3427DB2A7C7F68B2FF65B.jpg

    Here is the same photograph, opened in RAW, and saved as a JPeg (no changes or anything made)

    A6B6B7A79CD740A8892AD088C2E55BD1-0000333410-0002398110-00500L-3D77B9D710F241A781F6F0DD519982BF.jpg

    Now, I took photogtaphs of two girls over the weekend, too, and one of them was wearing a dress, similar in colour to the lighting in this photo, and the dress came out a lot more vibrant in the Raw files than it did in the JPegs, but it didn't ruin the image (it actually looked better, and I chalked it up to the RAW capturing colour better) but this photo has me wondering if my RAW files or Adobe Camera RAW has something wrong with it now?

    I took some photographs on friday, of people posed infront of a large red Coca Cola banner. A lot of the people in the photo were wearing Orange Fanta outfits, and both the Jpegs and RAW files had normal enough, decent looking colour. The coke photos were taken on Friday at 5pm or so. The above picture was taken on the same day, at 11pm or so, and I don't remember changing any settings or anything like that (And the photos look fine on the camera LCD).

    Anyone got any idea? This has me completely thrown (i assume its an adobe camera raw problem, but seems odd it only happens with one particular colour?)

    Bit lost on this one.

    Open to correction but my understanding of it is that the RAW file can't have too much red (or any colour for that matter) as RAW is only a representation of the camera sensor and not an interpretation of what an image should be. RAW is a data format and not an image file (yes, they are all 1's and 0's at the end of the day but in concept the difference lies between one being a processed version of the other). Therefore if I am correct in this, it means that most likely have an issue in your RAW processor software which is bumping up the RED channel - perhaps remembering a previous processing style from something.

    Check the WB Shift settings in the camera.

    You might have inadvertently changed the camera calibration settings in your RAW editor.

    I don't think that could be it, could it? I use Adobe Camera RAW and I don't ever really change any options in it at all (I wouldn't even know where to start to change calibration options!).

    I'm a little annoyed with this to be honest.

    I'm actually just gonna go and grab a few coloured A3 notebooks i have lying around and grab a quick test shot and see how the colours look.

    Righty oh, I just took some random photos of a few notebooks (they have glossy coloured fronts, red, blue, orange). The red ones were coming out noticeably redder than the Jpeg, so much so that I was losing detail in the reds because of it.

    Can I ask, if anyone has a decent internet speed, do ye fancy downloading my RAW file and opening it, and letting me know if it's wrecked for you, too? (it's a 27mb file, and it's the photo of the girl that I posted above);

    It can be gotten here;

    Would really appreciate any help here (if someone else opens it and it's like the first photo above, i know i've a photoshop problem, if they open it and it's like the second one, i know i have a camera problem).

    EDIT: I forgot I had a laptop, sorry. I just used a memory stick to put the RAW file on the laptop, and opened it with Camera RAW, and same problem. Photo is wrecked by over saturation of the reds. I don't get it. The shooting/colour mode on the 7D I'm using is "landscape", but I don't think that'd affect RAW files anyway? Only Jpegs?

    EDIT AGAIN: I read through the posts a few times, and 5uspect's one made me dig a little more into Google. Some guy reckoned he had the same problem when he moved from a 30D to a 7D and he noticed the reds being more luminous (okay, not the same problem, but somewhat similar). So I eventually found and changed the Adobe Camera Calibration/Profile from Afdobe Standard to Adobe Faithful, and it brought a little life back to the image, and made it much more usable. It looks much closer to the Jpeg, now, thankfully. Here it is straight out of RAW, as a Jpeg without any editing (except changing the profile of course).

    Jpeg on left, RAW>Jpeg on right;

    16EE40EC0BEA4A86BAFD7D33D12BD797-0000333410-0002398111-00500L-463E7790F7C3427DB2A7C7F68B2FF65B.jpg D0AD4326814C45F8BF4E66816826F463-0000333410-0002399248-00500L-19A94705FE5748A7BA1C44D89B992C39.jpg

    So I suppose it's a happy ending. At least I've learned something new and useful. It's still a bit blotchy looking, though. :(

    Cheers everyone. Where would I be without Boards :)

    I opened the file in UFRaw.

    Default by camera comes out as
    A39D2121C9F240A5BF6F0854D6D30A63-0000338047-0002399249-00500L-728EE16C83A44175BCB5496107BA3639.jpg

    Using Auto White Balance gives

    478B2087398C4342A4679467FF51D920-0000338047-0002399250-00500L-AF404AA6AC80470BB01F3741B03909FE.jpg

    So the RAW isn't really ruined but it does default on the very Red.

    Hope this helps a bit. Someone who can explain it better will hopefully post :)

    It's your camera profile.

    Top image is the image opened in RAW with nothing done.
    The bottom one is with setting the camera profile to Landscape.

    EDIT: snap!

    That's great stuff, lads, genuinely appreciated.

    At least now I know it wasn't just me it was happening with and I can relax and won't have to make an effort to avoid reds in future! Thank you very, very much for the effort in downloading the RAW file to check it, in particular. Ye're excellent!
