I'm looking to pick up a bit of furniture to hold some retro consoles and stuff in my man cave.
Ikea seems like the best bet for ok prices and decent quality stuff.

Was looking at this bookcase as you can add stuff to it like drawers or mini storage boxes etc:

    Any ideas?
Am I missing something obvious here that makes it a silly idea?

you would want to measure the holes and make sure they are wide enough for a console if you are planning on putting them in there? or is just for games.

It's mainly for consoles I'd say. Maybe some games on the bottom shelves.

The shelves should be big enough for most consoles as it's 149cm wide with 4 sections across. But I'll make sure before going for it as I'll have to drop into IKEA anyway to get it as they don't do online sales.

Get yourself some display cases as well to keep them nice and dust free.

I'm going to get a couple of customs ones made up so they fit just nicely. Well, as long as it doesn't cost a crazy amount of money.

Well custom built is always more but with shop display cases they usually come modular in 400mm sections that can be added to or at least located in the required size.
I'd love to have something along the lines of that for all my handhelds but it's getting it by the boss which poses the main problem

Tell her/him (hey it's a modern world) that its to protect your investment for the future when you can sell them for insane amounts of money and retire to a large villa in the south or France.

    That'll go down well alright.
I think a smaller cabinet maybe 1200mm x 600mm high would be acceptable for my house and I wouldn't get much stick about it at all especially if it took the cases and other assorted games junk out from under her feet, actually I think I'll broach the subject this evening and hopefully that'll take the sting out of it when I do turn up with a gargantuan cabinet:D

I'm usual ok with stuff like this as I actually don't like to keep any of my retro bits and pieces around the house. I keep it all in my office(man cave really) upstairs so she never really see's much of it until she walks into the freakfest that is my office.

Of course this might all change when the candy cab arrives and has to live downstairs for a while until I come up with a plan for it :D

This is my current predicament too, getting all the stuff I've amassed this past few months out from the front room and in to discreet storage.

The problem is space. Rather lack of it.

Oddly enough I was in Ikea yesterday looking at that bookcase. If I did go for it, I'd go with some of the 'Pluggis' series storage tubs. I'd prefer these as I wouldn't want everything on display, plus you prevent sun fade keeping them packed away in a cool, dry tub.

Nearly bought them yesterday, with relatives arriving early next week for D-Day that's Saturday week, the good woman is keen to have our gaf spotless.

Might pop down tonight for a few Pluggis tubs actually...

Well I'm really lazy at the moment and couldn't be bothered making my man cave even though I have a huge room to make into a games room.
I like playing my games downstairs on the couch as I've been doing for decades and I don't want to change my way of doing things.

Actually since I look I've an ancient cabinet in my house that is really retro like 1972 retro and I may just put that in the alcove and fill it with my handheld games etc

Proof that you have been reading this forum too much lately when you mentally picture an arcade machine rather than an actual cabinet.

I have the same range of shelves in my room and they're fairly decent even though I don't use them for my consoles! For size comparison width wise an original xbox will just about squeeze in.

Cool, so if an original xbox fits then most others so be fine. Unless someone wants to stick a Mega CD 2 in there :)

I picked up the following for all my consoles:

Can't argue with it for €60!

Whats the biggest screen that would fit that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Not too sure chief... I've a 28" CRT in there myself and it fits EASILY. Tonnes of room around it. My 32" flat screen would fit easily too. Beyond that I'm not so sure.

Lets say, for the sake of argument, that you owned every console since 1980.

What width would the widest one be?

So if you did buy the Ikea grid type shelves, what's the min width you would need?

I think IKEA Expedit shelves are 32cm wide.

The MD2 & MCD2 combo is a pretty wide beast...
