    Hi,
I'm doing a TEFL course in Phuket in September. I am trying to work out how much money to bring with me but any searches in do on the internet seem to include hookers:eek:, drinking every night etc.

I was wondering if anybody who has spent some time there could give me a rough idea budget-wise how much would I realistically need for 1 month, excluding hotel, hookers, drinking every night etc?

    ok,

hotels: 200 baht a night should get you a decent place with air con.

food: eating local food can be as cheap as 50 baht for a meal. (plate of rice, chicken, sauce and a drink)
eating euro/us food can go to 200 baht for a meal. (mcdonalds, burgers, steak + chips etc etc)
    eating a fancy/upper class restaurant can be 300 - 400 baht for a meal. (wine + meal + desert)

cinema: 200 baht should see you with a ticket + food. (they show a LOT of movies in english with thai subtitles, so its nice. and the cinemas are VERY comfortable)

travel: car taxi's for a journey from a hotel to night life area/city center can be about 100 - 200 baht. (air con taxi's.. MAKE SURE THEY USE THE METER unless its a long journey then haggle a price)
    motorbike taxi's can be 50 - 100 baht.

    nightlife: local beer +-50 baht a pint. +-50 - 100 for imported beer. +-200 - 250 for bulmers etc. vodka + coke +-80 - 100 baht.

hookers: depends on what you want really. up to 500 baht i think.

    1 euro = 45 baht.

when i went, i did my tefl over there, and i brought 5 grand, but that was for me and my gf. we stayed in a very nice apartment block, swimming pool, room cleaned daily, bills included etc, ate out for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks almost every night, cinema once a week, travel costs in aircon taxis, other entertainment such as bowling, touring around the country on weekends etc, and the 5 grand lasted us 3 months.

thats just over 25 euro a day each for EVERYTHING, and we lived VERY VERY nicely.

my advice, pack light. dont bring a lot of clothes.
its HOT out there. sticky humidity...
buy clothes over there. they are amazingly cheap and nice.

HAGGLE your prices down where you can. most of them will try charge you a lot more, so dont accept this.
while your doing your tefl course, talk to the owners about getting some thai lessons. most tefl courses offer it free.
it will give you a great help when giving directions to taxi/motorbike taxis, ordering food, buying stuff and haggling.

We got accomodation in Patong for around 200 baht. It wasn't plush, but it was clean and secure.
