    About two months ago I had a consult with my dentist - he said a filling was necessary and some cleaning by the dental hygienist so I booked in for an appointment two weeks later. The day of the appointment I find out the dentist is away off duty and I'm seen by a "dental therapist" whom I'm presuming is a dental hygienist. She did the cleaning which was fine but then proceeded to do the filling aswell. Is a dental therapist/hygienist meant to be doing fillings?? I'm not very impressed with the results, the filling looks very messy and covers over half of my tooth. She even muttered under her breath to her assistant "i still can never tell correctly" when she asked for a certain sized filling, half way through stopped and then asked for a smaller one. The scraping of the filling out has spread a huge silver patch all over my tooth which is very noticeable as it's a bottom one. Can I get this replaced by a white one somewhere else or is the damage irreversible??? :mad:

    Sorry I can't really help as I don't know for sure, but I'd think that if it is possible to do it again, that practice (and the actual dentist!) should do it for you?? I don't see why you should have to pay someone else!

    a dental therapist is allowed to do certain types of fillings in the UK, didn't know there were any in ireland yet?
    they are hygienists that have done some more training.
    where she said 'i still can never tell correctly', it's probably she didn't get the right amount of filling to be mixed. if it's a silver filling, it's mixed in spills, one spill for a small filling, 3 or 4 for a big one.
    i've been doing this for long enough and i still get it wrong too. if she was using one of those old mixers, they can be temperamental on giving the same dose every time.

    Was your treatment in the republic of Ireland?

    If so there are no dental therapists.

    Dental hygienists are allowed to

    place temporary dressings when crowns or fillings become dislodged in the course of treatment by a dental hygienist;

    Dental hygienists do not:
    1. diagnose disease;
    2. restore teeth;
    3. carry out pulp treatments;
    4. adjust unrestored surfaces;
    5. extract teeth.
    These skills are reserved for dentists

    The dental council takes a very serious view of the matters
