Root Canal - tenderness afterwards for how long?

    Hi all,

I had a root canal done about two weeks ago on a molar.

Procedure itself was almost painless and went well, was done in two sessions, with x rays before and after. The dentist showed me both and assured me that she had filled each nerve completely, as a failure to do so could mean a latent infection and a continuation of pain.

She warned me to expect some pain/tenderness on and off for anything from a week to a few months down the line and not to worry that these were a sign that the root canal had failed. She said she'd had one done herself recently and could verify that they could remain tender for a while.

About 4 days after the root canal the tooth beside it started to ache and became incredibly tender to press down on. This lasted for half a day. I took pain killers, and some preventative ones the next day, and all pain subsided.

For the past two days though it's vaguely tender to press down on the tooth next to the root canaled one, especially when I chew.

Has anyone had this experience with them? Will it settle itself? I'd go back to the dentist but because of cost issues I went north of the border to have the job done and would really like to avoid taking another day off and having to go all the way back up again just for her to tell me it'll settle eventually.

    Any experiences?

could have a problem with the tooth that tender to press on, the root canalled one may be fine....confidence and unfortunate but not out of the realms of reason.

I have had the same problem - tooth paining beside the tooth where the root canal was done. Am beginning to think that the work has been done on the wrong tooth! Did you need to get the tooth filled ?

I have had 3 root canals in the course of 3 months......hell on bloody earth re the pain and discomfort......had my last job 5 days ago......terrible discomfort the next day but its all settled down now.

Stick with it says me as a patient.....if not settled down after say 5 days I'd be with a heavy heart going back to the dentists chair. My biggest problem during this whole process was my jaw joints became very painful as having your mouth open for such a long time just enhanced the pain factor for the work done........in hindsight if we were living 40 years ago, we'd have had our teeth whipped out and living with dentures....no thanks.

Likewise, your paying large loot to get this work done and your receptive dental surgeon should gladly take a call from you to appease/discuss your situation.

    Best of luck.

ps 7 days plus post treatment and no pain which is a first in nearly two years of teeth trouble............yippee. There was a stage when I felt like jumping up out of the dentists chair and screaming frig this........all worth it in the end.
