you could do a hard reset on the router but all settings including password would be put back to standard. They might be annoyed at you though for deleting there settings.

should be a tiny pin hole somewhere on back that says reset,as for password not sure if it go back to what on router or might change to
    username:admin
    password:admin

What kind of advice is this?
    For fcuk sake?
God only knows how the router has been configured, what custom settings are on it and how many devices will have to be reconnected...........

Jebus Price, OP, you're in a bit of bother now especially if you dont have a network cable of some description available.

That depends on what was configured on it. Could be straight forward, may not, it most likely is.
But all devices will have to be reconfigured to connect to it again however.

You'll have to wait till the owner gets home and discuss with them.

its only a home ZyXEL modem with a laptop connected to the eircom broadband.

    Will discs etc be required

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭ArtyM

Man, why did you do that?
That was taking a big risk, you wiped the config of the router.
On the plus side, you said it is eircom broadband - if that is the case it is good news for you. Eircom connections typically do not require a unique username and password. Perlico, bt, gaelic, and others do - lets hope your friend hasnt switched isps.
The router should be able to establish a connection to the net with the default settings configured on the router.
So what lights are on the router now?
You should have 1. power, 2. wireless, 3. dsl and 4. internet
dsl should be solid and not flashing.
internet should be green to indicate it has connected
    Is this what you see?

    Power light flashing

DSL light flash every so often

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭SlanGoFoil2011

then every so often all the Ethernet lights flash

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭ArtyM

That does not sound right at all.
If no cables are connected then the ethernets should not be flashing. Also, the power should not be flashing.
Either the reset did not work completely or the router is damaged(unlikely).
Power it off, disconnect power cable and leave it off for a few mins.
Restart and what should happen is that the power light comes on and stays on solid, the dsl may flash for a min or 2 - then it should go solid to indicate a dsl source. Then the internet light should come on.
    Give that a try.
Good luck, dont stress. This should be fixable.
    Post back

powered off back - back on now

Power light flashes about 5 times, then DSL light flashes ones, then power flashes about 5 times - then all ethernet lights flash once together.

Its not broekn as it was working before i hit reset button.

Any ideas - drunk owners on the way home at the moment

maybe not as systematic as 5 and 5 - but thats roughly the sequence,

    Ok
The harm is already done so not many options but to trying another reset at this stage. No guarantee it will work so do it at your own risk.
Follow these instructions and cross your fingers...

    1) Power off the router,
    2) Hold down the recessed reset button on the rear of the unit (keep it held down)
    3) Power on the router with the reset button still pressed down.
    4) You will notice all the LAN lights flash at the same time which will indicate that the router has reset - this takes up to 30 seconds.
    5) When all the LAN lights do flash simultaneously you can let go of the reset button.

    Good luck

It is the reset technique as recommended by the router manufacturer from their website.
I would never recommend doing a reset on somebody else's router, but you are passed that stage now as you have already done it.
Your options are to fess up and replace their router or try and fix the issue.
The only fix available is a properly applied reset, as per the steps listed.
    Good luck

    Havent fessed up yet.

    Replace their router.

A reset must be a common enough thing to happen.

Ill drop over there later and try to fix it.

    Turn off
    Hold down reset
Turn on while reset is till pressed.
Wait for all the lights and let go of reset
    Cross you fingers

    If it doesnt work????????

No word yet from markirish22, since he suggested reset.

Not surprised - a seriously bad piece of advice (although it wouldn't usually lead to the situation you are in now - where the router appears not to be loading its software properly)

The owner should have noticed by now that their internet is not working. You might want to either let them know what happened or deny all knowledge altogether and let them call Eircom support.

I have reset plenty of modems and have never had a problem, all of them had always defaulted to the password included on the modem. I warned him that it would delete the settings so it was at his risk. He probably didnt do a proper reset on it for something like that to occur. The reason for delay is im in germany at the moment. When you ring eircom support there response to fix everything is first pull out the phone line and power off-on the modem then if doesnt work sometimes a hard reset.

Advising someone to reset the router at all is a daft solution to the given problem, more so when the router doesnt belong to the poster, they havent a clue what settings are on it and you have no idea how IT proficient the poster is.

Understood - reseting the router wouldnt normally cause the issue that appears to be there right now and it will reset to the original password however its not the smartest thing to do given the circumstances.
