Wipers driving me mad

    My wipers are skimming across the windscreen, scraping against it rather than cleaning it. Unless there's a load of water they will skim across without wiping the winscreen clean. The noise is unreal when this happens. This has been a problem since I got handed down the car a year ago. Since then it was serviced prior to the NCT and new wipers put on but the problem remains. Any ideas what's causing this?

    replace the entire blades at any motor factors. Bosch are a good brand.. Jobs done. replacing just the rubber is no good.

    Agreed, I guess someone changed the entire blade with a spurious item which is not curved properly to your screen. Get some good blades and you'll be good to go.

    If good "normal" style wipers don't fix it, Bosch Aerotwin are the biz.
    Her car had bosch normal style wipers and they were still noisy - the aerotwins are fantastic.

    I have Aldi/Lidl ones on my current car, and they are really noisy on my windscreen:(

    Thank God. I had been informed by someone equally as clueless as me that the problem was that my windscreen was at the wrong angle and would have to be corrected :p

    Replace the whole wiper not just the rubber. Had same prob for years and recently had enough. Dropped in to a garage and had them replaced in minutes. 32 yoyo's. So worth it. Not a peep since.

    Valeo wipers can be picked up on ebay for about 15 quid including delivery. Job done.

    Worn or defective wiper linkages can cause wipers to judder and drag too. To test, lift the wipers blades completely off the screen and switch them on. Watch the movement of the wipers as they "wipe" through the air to make sure that they are unhindered. Any inconsistency (which might be accompanied by a change in noise from the mechanism) might be indicative of an issue with the mechanism.

    Don't dismiss this out of hand. Due to air pressure against the windscreen (which causes flexing) and the combined effects of rain-water and windscreen washer fluid (which cause shrinkage) it may be more economical to replace the windscreen once rather than be constantly changing the wiper-blades. On some cars it is possible to swap the front and rear windows in order to even out the shrinkage and flexing; other cars allow for the exchange of front and rear seats and reversing the gear-knob to achieve the same objective.

    OP, I've also solved this problem more cheaply, by twisting the wiper with both hands until it stops being noisy. (Don't switch on while twisting!:D)

    Ha, I thought I was on the After Hours forum for a second!:D

    FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

    You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

    Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
