had I accepted this would they have charged me or what were my rights in relation to this matter.

I'd have kept the extra order, and let them come looking for it. This has happened me twice, each time I was told to keep it!

Happened to me before too, told the delivery guy that i had already recieved my order, and he said ' oh, my phones ringing, i can't hear you '. They never came looking for it.
