    Hey,

Last night i was driving to work i was nearly there when i lost power in the car, power steering went, rev dropped to 0 and speedo dropped to 0 i could'nt accelerate. So i pulled in on the side of the road when i noticed engine management light was on, oil light on and battery light was on. Turned off car and looked under bonnet, no smoke, nothing leaking couldnt see anything wrong, so left it for 5 minutes tried to restart it but i wouldnt start, anyway went to work returned about 5 hours later turned the key and up it went to problem, no lights and drove the 5 min journey home and still no problem today.
Can anyone tell me what might have went wrong because i have no idea its strange to me.
    Car is 1999 1.0l corsa.

When you tried to restart did the engine turn over, im guessing it did! could of been any one of a number of things, but the fact that it is running again meand its most likely not serious.
Has the car been serviced anytime recently?
Could be a blocked filter, fuel starvation, spark plugs, those would be hte things I would look at first and see if the problem lies there,
Just a thought but was it raining at the time, did you drive through a puddle and maybe wet the electrics which could of dried out by the time you came back to try restart it?

Older model Honda Accords had a recall for a faulty relay that could cause a complete stall/cut-out just like that. But the fuelpump/fuelfilter (or fuel pump relay) could also cause it? An intermittent problem is pain to fix tho...

It's either a coolant sensor or a camshaft sensor

As far as I know, some of the corsas gave trouble with crankshaft sensors so I'd get it checked as soon as you can. A faulty crankshaft sensor just gets worse and worse and could eventually leave you stranded.

There's your problem, and I speak from current experience.

This would have no bearing on the problem the OP is describing.

    Is that a motoring pun?

Believe it or not I have seen this happen. Had a woman who brought a car into me with no oil in it!

It would also meet all the describtions of the OP as the engine stopped cranking and if left for a while it may tick over again for a short period of time.

I'd check all the simple things yourself but would not leave this problem un-diagnosed!!

+ 1 on the crankshaft sensor. I had it on my 99 1.0 corsa not so long ago with the exact symptoms you describe. The problem seems to appear when the sensor gets warm and the engine just shuts down. When you came back 5 hours later everything was nice and cool and it started fine.

I will also tell you from experience the time from when it starts until it shuts down will keep getting shorter.

How much did it cost to get fixed?

I can't remember exactly, I think it was around 80 but definitely under 100.

Its been mentioned a few times but your describing the common crankshaft sensor issue that the x10/x12 engines suffer from.

You'd need to have it diagnosed for sure, the fault will be stored in the ecu even if the light is off now.
