I finished college last year in Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing with 2.1. I wasn't sure what job I wanted, even now after nearly a year I still don't know. I have found any IT graduate jobs are looking for 6 months plus work experience which I don't have because my college course never offered that option of year work experience. Unsure what I want to have career in I am applying for any job I am able to do without need a year plus work experience.Which is hard to find and when I do apply for a job, I don't get any word back most of the time. I was on WPP internship just 3 weeks ago but because of company having problems they had cut internships short. I only got about 2 months experience but if company was still doing the internship I would gotten more experience which I really needed. I was lucky to get that internship. I just want to work for a good company. Sorry for long speech I am just getting depressed over looking for a job.

Have you tried somewhere like Google?

Yeah, google sounds good but then they don't have vacancies or they don't have vacancies that I can apply for.

I saw IT graduate program not google but they want 2.1 and 6-12 months experience.

I also saw IT graduate jobs looking for 2.1 plus 450 cao points or B2 in higher level maths.

I wouldn't really be up on the whole Computing thing but I saw loads and I emphasise loads of jobs on Jobs.ie for Google.

Just thought I'd mention it :)

Same here except it was a postgrad I did in a computer science h dip. Got same result as you. Still searching but with my degree in BIS I have business jobs to fall back on. I'm the same not still sure what job I really want but aim and apply for the ones I be good at, already have experience in, skilled and capable of doing. Still no luck after a years search and applying for over a 100 jobs, is wrecking my head! Blue in the face from it. Still trying not to give up. I worked in an IT job for six months before my postgrad and its still not enough to get my foot in the door. Its unfortunate that they didn't offer workplacement as part of your course where a lot of students really need in most courses they do, I don't know why colleges don't emphatise on that. Unlike my degree there was no workplacement had to find work in the summer instead.

There are a couple of graduate jobs out there that don't need any work experience/less work experience. Other than that it would be graduate programmes. You should definitely apply to them since you have the required 2:1 you get through no problem just trying to get passed each stage after is the tricky part as in an online psychometric test, telephone interview, experience/assement day which would include face to face interview, presentation maybe, check the online test, group exercises with other candidates and meeting people at the company/business.

Would you consider applying for jobs voluntarily in IT other than a WPP or just offer yourself to do voluntary work for a week or the summer? You did well to get yourself an internship with a WPP but two months is quiet short but hey its work experience you can put it in your CV, shows you have tried to get a job, not many get it so soon after college! I'd suggest you apply for another WPP. Maybe go for jobs other than IT specifically like IT sales maybe? You wouldn't be in IT but you still be doing something related to IT? Maybe work around that that when searching for a job. Would you consider going abroad or to the UK?

If you are unsure where you want to go or what job in IT you would like I'd suggest start off at the bottem ladder as in IT Helpdesk. A lot of IT graduates start there or in development/programming roles. Focus on what you are good at, what you excel in expertise in, what you have a natural ability in. How you did in your exams would give you an indicator as to what areas of IT to go into. I suggest you write out a list of jobs you like, want, maybe or don't want and shorten down your list and aim for them then maybe widen the net a bit and be a bit bolder an apply for something you might think is challenging. I don't think its about working for a good company. Big companies like google, IBM etc are hard to get into, you really need a talent to show for to get into those companies in IT. I would stick with smaller companies/businesses for you are your a new graduate. You have a higher chance of being offered an interview even a job! I wouldn't let the internship you have done throw you off from applying for other WPP's. Keep searching don't give up! Somewhere the right job is there for you and for anyone else like you!

Years of experience might come against you since you are a new graduate its important for you to get your foot in the door regardless whether its IT or not, it be a stepping stone for the future. Its the case of being lucky and a draw I suppose. If you have a good CV, show off your exam results and your projects. If you can get an interview at all you be doing well. You might have to do a good few before someone will take you on. But be prepared to do anything!? If you are offered a job you are happy with then go for it! Don't hold back! If it feels right do it.

You might have a poor sense of direction in searching for a career but wittle down your choice of career rather than just applying for any old job. Another thing regarding CV's and Cover Letters make sure you tailor them and proof read them. Sometimes how you are preceived in a cv/cover letter can affect employers choices. If you show a hint of lack of direction in job searching and not sure what your goals are and not knowing where you are going with your career then that will show, you might not think it but they might see it when they read your CV. Its an employers market so best go with the flow as best you can.

Don't be too hard on yourself OP. You aren't the only one in this world in your position. Think positive and don't let searching for work get you down. I know it gets everyone down and think negatively for a while but look on the brightside. Chin up, this won't last forever!

    Good luck OP

Hey can you give us an idea of the skills you have like programming languages there is a lot of demand for Java and SQL at the moment preferably combined.

First thing you need to do is make a killer CV even without experience you can make it look good see if you can get your old boss where you were an intern to be a reference then I would recommend looking at your and doing it up in the Europass CV format and just remove the photo and Age, gender bits employers don't look for that info here. Remember your CV is how you first present yourself to employers make it good.

The main programming language on my course was Java and I did some SQL, HTML, CSS, XML and Actionscript also. I find they want C++ plus .net most of time in jobs I really would like apply for. I did a bit of C in college but not enough to be good at it and I know nothing of .net. I am rusty now with programming after being out of college even though I liked it. I don't mind learning, I want learn the skills I need get a job but I just don't want pick wrong choice.

OP i believe there is about 90% (or 95%) of graduates from the recent years are in your exact same situation. the current economy downtime is really depressing. i believe if you have been looking around on the jobs sites you would have know that there is simply no jobs for fresh grads, they all asking for some ridiculous 3-5 years experience.

i am not sure for your field but maybe is time to do a MSc after 1 year of searching job. preferably a MSc in UK(or any other country) with work placement, so that you may get a job in that country. and maybe after a few years of experience you can come back here if you want.

I was thinking of doing a MSc, I have applied to one already just see if I could get it. I will look for others but this offers a job at the end if I get it. I hope I do, so I can just start working.
