Is 6000 miles service intervals too much, or too often on a 1.9 TDI engine? I always used to do it at this but some car enthusiast told me that you should leave it for 8000miles in between services. Anything under that is overkill he told me. He could be right that's what I want to know?

My independent mechanic who is an excellent mechanic recommended me to do it at 5-6k miles as he said its good for the engine to have fresh oil and wont loose compression etc.

What do you tdi boardies do?

    Opinions.

I service the 2.0 version of that engine every 15k KMS with long life oil. Its very easy to do OP. There is a thread here showing you how to do it..

I do about approx. 25,000miles a year on a 2000 Audi A4 through good and bad roads.

6000 miles may be a tad overkill when you clock up the miles that quickly :)

    Cheers for the reply corkie,

I would but dont get me wrong here, the only reason I don't do it myself is that if there is something else that needs replacing in my car and unless its absolutely obvious, I will not spot things that my mechanic will and he is very genuine and will replace it if it deems necessary. Therefore my car will go for longer. Thats the only reason.

Service interval should be 10k miles. So servicing every 8k miles is well enough.

should I do it at a later stage from now on do you reckon?

+1 especially if the mechanic is using fairly decent oil.

Yep, what the two lads said :D
I'd be tempted to go to 10k miles if he is using the correct spec oil to be honest.

He uses the fully synthetic oil for tdi engines. He told me its the best. So I can increase my intervals to 10K from now on. My car an English import has a full history of short service intervals which was done at a Audi garage until I bought the car. The previous owner used to do it every 5000 miles.:)

I would of thought between 10-12k miles or every 12 months would apply for a 1.9tdi. 6k is a bit overkill. It won't do any bad but with your milage, that's 4 services a year. Tis a few quid!

Mine is done every 10k miles on the button with long life oil on the advice of my mechanic.

Diesel filter is also changed as he reckons it will negatively affect injectors as the miles pile on.

Naturally all air and oil filters are also done

I used to do it every 6k miles on my VW Bora and Audi A4 TDI 's. Overkill? Perhaps...but I'm a fussy fcukker. Annual mileage at the time was around 12k miles, however.

Edit:My Bmw 320d is serviced every 6k miles too

True, I was only doing it because of my mechanics advice and because of the high miles and driving my car was doing. But I'll leave it stretch till 8-10K from now on going by all posters advice here. The car isn't worth that maintenance I was giving it even though I look after it very well and its still runs smooth.

If its well looked after and working perfectly after 11 years and hasn't cost you anything major then IT IS WORTH IT especially if you plan on keeping it longer
